Judith Rae Hughes

January 26, 1946 ‒ June 29, 2020

Marion, Ohio

Judith Rae Hughes, age 74 of Marion, passed away at her home on Monday, June 29, 2020.

Judith was born January 26, 1946 in Marion, the daughter of Homer Edward Holliday and Yvonne Catherine (Cory) Holliday-Fergueson. She was educated in Marion and graduated from Harding High School.

Judith was united in marriage to Lawrence Michael Hughes on August 28, 1976. The couple made their home in Marion where they raised their children. Judith had a special place in her heart for children and dedicated her career to education. She served for many years as a pre-school teacher at Epworth Pre-School, touching countless lives.

Family always came first. Her children were her life and she enthusiastically supported everything they did growing up and all of the events they belonged to at Harding High School. Family meals were a staple in the Hughes household and when all the family was together Judith’s heart overflowed. She was artistically driven, crafting and creating silk flower arrangements for many weddings. She was known as the cake baker and decorator extraordinaire. Judith enjoyed camping, watching old westerns and listening to Elvis. Swinging outside in her swing and enjoying her yard brought her great delight. She had a heart that was bigger than she was; warm, generous, and comforter are just a few of the words that describe who Judith was. Family or not, everyone called her “JuJu” and was beloved by everyone.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Lawrence “Mike” Hughes; children: Lisa Rae (Larry) Collier, Noel Patrick (Tonya) Jerome and Melissa Taylor; God-Children: Amber, Drew, and Kendra Werley; Mawmaw to: Samantha, Nathan, Nick, Elijah, Emmarae, Ajah, Alexis, Jack, Bella, Sawyer, Sutton, Dylan, and Gryphin; great-Mawmaw to: Toby, Sadie, Monroe, Piper, and Charlie; siblings: Gary E. (Linda) Holliday and Beth A. McFann; her beloved dog, Abby Rae and also surviving are the many children that she “adopted” over the years that knew her as JuJu.

Judith is preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at Snyder Funeral Homes, DENZER Chapel, 360 East Center St., Marion from 4PM to 7PM; funeral service will be Thursday at the funeral home at 10:30AM; Burial will be in Marion Cemetery.

  • May God bless you all at this difficult time. I do not recall ever not seeing Judy with a great smile on her face. For the times we sat near her at Harding football games, poolside at Lincoln, She welcomed us like family. All the behind the seen things like making hundreds of cupcakes along side Lisa for the entire football team on many occasions throughout the years. My last memory of Judy was sitting in the stands at the Colosseum waiting for at least two hours before the boys graduated from high school because it was worth the wait to see her sweet grandson up close. She took care of us all, pulling like ten fancy fans from her bag to keep us cool. There was never a loss for words with her. Conversations were always a delight, always ending with laughs. I believe Judy has taught many like myself that even the smallest simplest act of kindness can go a long way. What a true treasure and blessing she was to so many. Lisa, Larry, Elijah and family we are keeping you all in prayer.

  • Mike, Lisa, Noel and families,
I am heartbroken! Judi was one of the best and I loved her dearly! Her kind caring way, her ability to make everyone feel like family in her home and that ornery laugh are the memories I will cherish. My life has been so much richer for knowing you Judi! Rest In Peace, my friend.
Rest assured, during this difficult time, I will be keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers. May you find comfort in your memories and peace in your faith. Sending my love and sympathy.

  • I’m so sorry for your loss and hope God will comfort you all in this difficult time. Judi was such a sweet lady and always had a smile for you. There are no words to effectively convey the deepest sympathies I hold for each of you. I truly hope that the happiest memories of Judy, her spirit, her love, and her warmth linger vividly in you, and bring smiles to your faces often. Hoping, also, that an overwhelming outpouring of love and concern from your friends will gird you through the toughest moments of grief, and carry you on long after. Bless your hearts. RIP Judy.

  • Mike, We are truly sorry for your loss with the passing of such a wonderful person as Judy. She was always such a good person and had a beautiful smile. Your loss is Heaven’s gain.

  • To all who love Judy, especially her children grandchildren and husband. I need you to you long time she babysat for my little girl way back when. Our first trip to Florida we took with Judy and a little Thunderbird. The only person who could touch the floor because the crowded conditions was who was driving. She’s been on my mind lately a lot and I was hoping to get over to see her soon. Unfortunately we put things off until it’s too late. Judy I love you, I’ll miss you forever, and I can’t thank you enough for the friend that you’ve been. Special blessings to all of your family and friends and try to remember the good times and put a smile on your face for Judy. Joyce Noe

  • Lisa, Larry & Elijah,
Like everyone else, we were devastated to hear of Miss Judy’s passing. We were just blessed enough to be one of the many to have known her. So many wonderfully kind and loving qualities that made her Judy, I see in you Lisa. I’ll never forget her smiling face I would see every week in the stands at the boys’ football games or other school functions. She would never miss seeing her grandson for anything with that smile on her face. If anyone was in need, she would be right there to help just like you Lisa. There are countless others with stories and memories like mine that will keep Miss Judy alive. Hopefully memories like these that everyone shares will help lessen the pain in your hearts during this difficult time. Your family has ALWAYS been and continues to be part of ours. We are keeping you all and the rest of the family in our hearts and prayers. Fly high now Miss Judy, your wings are waiting.
Love, Melissa & Bob Foster & Christopher Thompson
