Joyce A. West, age 73, of Howard, passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at her home with her loving family by her side.

She was born on February 25, 1944 in Napoleon, Ohio to the late Ronald and M. June (Baldwin) Nye. Joyce was a 1962 graduate of Hamler High School and later a 1966 graduate of Defiance College.  She taught the majority of her career at Holgate Local Schools from which she retired.  Joyce received the Excellence in Education Award in Henry County in 1987.  She was a member of the Gamma-Omega-Kappa Sorority at Defiance College, the Red Hats, the Apple Valley Singers, and the Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon.

Joyce is survived by her husband David West; her son Todd (Amy) West; her daughter Tami (Dan) Benyei; four grandchildren, Lindsay West, Ava West, Claire Benyei, Jack Benyei; her brother Larry (Pat) Nye; and her sister Marsha Bennett.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at the Faith Lutheran Church beginning at 11AM with Pastor Mark Wildermuth officiating. The family will observe a private graveside service at Brown Cemetery in Bryan, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Hospice of Knox County or Faith Lutheran Church.

  • I am so sorry David and the West family. Joyce was such a wonderful woman. She was so fun to talk with and her laugh was contagious. The love that she and David have always shown Faith, they treat her just like one of their own. I will miss her but joyous in the fact that she is pain free and with the Heavenly Father. She will be watching over her precious family. Prayers for all of you at this difficult time.
