Joyce A. Prater

August 04, 1960 ‒ January 09, 2020

Chesterville, Ohio
Formerly of Marion, Ohio

Joyce A. Prater, age 59, of Chesterville and formerly of Marion, went to be the with Lord on Thursday, January 9, 2020, at Countryview of Sunbury following a five year battle with cancer.

On August 4, 1960, Joyce was born in Mount Sterling, Kentucky, the fourth of five children of Alice Prater and the late Lones Prater.  Her family traveled back and forth from their family farm in Kentucky to Marion, Ohio, until making Marion their permanent home in the 1960’s.  She graduated from Pleasant High School.

Furthering her education, Joyce earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Zoology from the Ohio State University.  Her career then took her to several places, including an internship at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, FL, with their horticulture dept., the Columbus Zoo, and Oakland Nursery in Delaware.  She then went back to college again in her 40’s, and was proud to earn her degree in Histology from Columbus State in 2007.  She used her degree as a histologist for Central Ohio Skin and Cancer with Dr. Nash in Powell for ten years, until she was no longer able due to her health.

During her time at Oakland Nursery, Joyce had a fellow co-worker, Frank Godorhazy, who always seemed to wind up in the same section she was in.  From there, the rest is history.  They were married on October 5, 2005, and have cherished their fourteen years together.

Very faithful, Joyce was a member of Grace Polaris Church in Westerville, where she had been baptized.

Joyce “was an outside girl, who loved to play in the dirt.”  Throughout her life, she loved planted extensive flower and vegetable gardens, often experimenting with different variations of plants.  At her home in Chesterville, she had different experiments going on in each of her six 20’ x 12’ garden plots.  She also loved finding or making special flower pots, to try and get as many flowers in her house as possible.  She enjoyed being a member of the Morrow County Master Gardeners.

Having a very silly and fun loving personality, Joyce loved to “goof off” and be “a clown”, and was often “hilarious.”  Every year, she looked forward to her favorite holiday of Halloween to see who she could try and scare.  She also enjoyed collecting anything related to Kermit the Frog and Hippos.

She will be missed by her beloved husband, Frank Godorhazy of Chesterville; mother, Alice Prater of Marion; four siblings: June (Larry Christian) Martin of Prospect, Gary (Judy) Prater of Marion, Randy (Julie) Prater of Urbana, and Kim (Greg) Maynard of Alexandria; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her family will greet friends from 4 – 6 pm on Friday, January 17, 2020, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, DENZER Chapel, 360 E. Center St., Marion.  Services honoring her life will follow there at 6 pm with Pastor Bill Snyder officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society (https://donate3.cancer.org/).

  • We will miss Joyce, a lovely young woman whom we admired for her hard fight against cancer. She lost her earthly life much sooner than might be expected, however, she now lives a joyous life with our Lord. She experiences now what we can only look forward to. Frank., although this is a difficult separation from Joyce, remember that this is just a temporary goodbye. We will be praying for you, Frank.
