Joseph R. Overholt

August 29, 1948 ‒ October 23, 2016

Fredericktown, Ohio

Joseph R. Overholt, age 68, of Fredericktown, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 23, 2016. He was born on August 29, 1948 in Urbana, Ohio the son of Ralph and Dorothy (Headings) Overholt. Joe was a 1966 graduate of Fredericktown High School and earned his Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Agronomy from The Ohio State University. Joe and family farmed many acres in Fredericktown and he was a licensed insurance agent specializing in crop insurance for the Broerman Insurance Company. Joe also co-owned and operated OT&T fertilizing company.

Since the time he was a little boy growing up in a Mennonite community, Joe has fostered the love for his Lord and Savior and leading others to share in his faith. In 1992 Joe established and pastored Overcomers Christian Church and in a quick three years purchased their first building in Mount Vernon. He has shared the word and with God’s blessing the church was able to expand and purchase their newest building in Mount Vernon in 2012. Joe’s mission in life was to share God’s way and to prepare young men and women to be spiritually, physically, socially, financially, mentally and emotionally ready.

Joe was a loving individual and a great encourager to everyone he met. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

He is survived by his loving wife Victoria (Hoeflich) Overholt, whom he married on September 13, 1969, his children; Melissa (Mark) Phillips of Fredericktown, Jeremy (Traci) Overholt of Mount Vernon, Brent (Brooke) Overholt of Fredericktown, Matthew (Laura) Overholt of Fredericktown, Jamie (Ruth) Overholt of Apple Creek, Courtney (Mark) Motter of Fredericktown and Joey (Liz) Overholt of Fredericktown, twenty two grandchildren, five brothers, Richard (Faye) Overholt of Fredericktown, David (Myrna) Overholt of Kouts, Indiana, Edward (SueAnn) Overholt of Fredericktown, Jay (Maria Rezos) Overholt of Fredericktown, Mark (Sonya) Overholt of Fredericktown and a sister, Mary Ellen (Dennis) Hazen of Mount Vernon.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Fredericktown United Methodist Church, 123 Columbus Road, Fredericktown, Ohio where a funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. Pastor Tennyson Fitch will be officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Joe’s name may be made to the Overcomers Christian Church, PO Box 851, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050.

  • I wanted to share a memory of Joe from years ago at a little league game. I am pretty sure it was Jamie pitching and he having a rough time and the other team was taunting him with encouragement of their coach and a few fans from his own team were not so nice either. It was obviously getting to him and he was fighting tears! Joe called time, picked up a catchers mitt and motioned Jamie over to the side away from the other players, but right in front of his team’s fans. He knelt down with him and told him he knew he could do this and he wanted him to forget everyone was there – the batter, the other team and the fans! “Just pretend it is you and me in the backyard, playing catch. And remember, win or lose I will always love ya!” Jamie walked back out to the mound, looked at his dad and threw nine perfect strikes! He came off that field like he had just pitched a no hitter in the world series! What a wonderfully sweet lesson! In one moment he lovingly encouraged his son but also quietly put the heckling “adults” in their place. We need more men, coaches and fathers like that and I am sure Joe raised 5 who are following his lead and passing it on to their sons!
You have my condolences and are in my prayers.

  • To the Overholt Family,

Even when I didn’t see you and Joe often, you were always in my heart. When i did see you both, it was like it had only been minutes, instead of weeks. God bless you all.

  • Dear Vicky and family,
May you and your family feel the strength, love and peace with the Lord gently upholding you during this time.
    Prayers for all of you.

  • Dear Overholt Family,

So many of you have touched my family spiritually. My heart goes out to all of you, but Jeremy especially, because of his genuine friendship with my brother and family, along with his ability to be a great Coach to my children. Once during a funeral that Joe was conducting, I spoke during the services, I could barely talk, but Joe stood behind me, put his hand on my shoulder, and gave me the strength to finish. Your husband, father, and grandfather, during his time here on earth, proved to be a wonderful example of a Christian leader at home and in this community. May God comfort you all.

    God Bless,

  • The best barometer of a man’s character is his family. In my 42 yrs I have never known a finer group of people. From the youngest to the oldest, they are all the best humanity has to offer. The ripples the Overholt’s create spread throughout this community and beyond. The amount of love this family shares with all they meet is immeasurable and all are better off after having been with an Overholt. We have not really lost Joe. He is my best friend. He is the father of my son’s favorite cousin. He goes with his family and is present in all they do. I feel Joe’s love all around me.

  • Vicky, my heart is in pain for your heart this week. Joe absolutely adored you and never took your beauty for granted. I remember in Jr. High and High School, Joe would write you love letters which you couldn’t hardly wait to open, then you would return to him your own letters. When you became FFA Queen, Joe was so proud of his girl. I especially remember both before and after your marriage, he was never afraid to compliment you by his comments and the look in his eyes, no matter who else was around. The love you and Joe had will live on in your memories. Bless you, dear Vicky, one of my best friends in school.

  • I just read all of the above condolences and have read so many wishes on Facebook and my heart feels all of the words that have been spoken as well. There are no words I can say that would add any more memories. I have always wondered why some are taken early and did find in ISAIAH 57:1-2 “THE GOOD MEN PERISH; THE GODLY DIE BEFORE THEIR TIME AND NO ONE SEEMS TO CARE OR WONDER WHY. NO ONE SEEMS TO REALIZE THAT GOD IS TAKING THEM AWAY FROM EVIL DAYS AHEAD. FOR THE GODLY WHO DIE SHALL REST IN PEACE.” Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the family at this time.

  • Vickie and all of your family,
I have just read all of the condolences and there isn’t much else I can say, except
to let you know how good he was to my mother, Anna Riter, your neighbor. He
took time from his family to visit her. That is a good neighbor. Thanks.
He left his family too soon and I am sure you have may good memories.
My sympathy to all of you

  • Years ago on the first day of 4th grade I remember a new student reporting to our teacher, Miss Woodard, and for some reason he remembered me. Joe and I shared this story a few times over the years, most recently at our Class Reunion. I also remember in the 8th grade sharing a table with Joe in study hall and he was admiring another Junior High student a few tables away..Vickie Hoeflich. Destiny for Joe came early.
Over the years until graduation we shared many times as classmates and teammates. In the ensuing years conversations with Joe were always most interesting, as he and Vickie would do mission work in Third World countries while also establishing a family beyond belief. It is with heartfelt sorrow that I extend my condolences to Vickie and family and the Overholt family as well.

  • Dear Ed, Sue, and Family; Melissa, Mark and Family, and Joe’s Entire Family, Although we never had the pleasure of meeting Joe, we always heard about what a great man he was and how much he did for the community and his church. May the fond memories you have of this wonderful man remain vivid in your minds and they will constantly remind you about what a fine individual he was. Sending all of his family and friends our deepest sympathy. Sincerely, Susan and Dick Huggins/Fredericktown

Our hearts are hurting for each of you as you all process the loss of a loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandpa, brother… in a different way. Joe wore so many hats, yet he remembered to do so by the power of the Holy Spirit living in and through him. I can just picture that big smile of his and his words of kindness and encouragement. It seems like yesterday that he was grabbing our attention at the Fredericktown Tomato Show and praying God’s blessing over us for a big family. Well, his blessing really “took”, with our first three being born in less than 2-1/2 years. David would follow over 2-1/2 years later, and here we are “empty-nesters”. I don’t know where the time went, but I can say that having four children has been such an incredible blessing. With Mom and Dad’s starter kit of two (Joel and Emily), God has multiplied many times over.
Although many would discourage large families in this day and age, Joe knew that the only way to overcome darkness is with the Light of God. I’m so thankful for your family’s influence through the years, not only on our family but in the lives of so many. Thank you for allowing God to use you. We love you and are praying for you.
    Always,
    Joy & Joel Cochran

  • Vicky,

Joe was one of the first men I met when I came to Fredericktown to farm over 40 years ago. He was one of the finest men I’ve known. He will be sorely missed. You and your family are in our prayers.

  • To the Overholt family,

Having lost Lois’s father only six years ago, we realize what a large hole Joe’s passing will leave in your life. Joe helped us get through some very tough months when we first retired to Ohio from the USAF. His steady faith strengthened every member of our family for the years that followed. May God bless you during these days of transition, and help strengthen you for the years ahead. Our prayers are with you.

  • Our hearts go out to you and your family. Life has so many twists and turn, ups and downs. Joe was a very nice guy. I enjoyed talking with him. I was shocked to hear the news this past Lord’s Day morning.
Praying for your family in the days to come…and today, as the family gathers together. You guys in our thoughts and prayers.

  • Vicky and family,
My deepest sympathy to you and your family. Joe was a great guy. Cherish the wonderful memories. Thoughts and prayers.

  • It’s hard to imagine Fredericktown without Joe. But what a wonderful legacy he left us. Rest in Peace

  • Sorry to learn of Joe’s passing. May the Overholt family find comfort and peace in our Lord and Savior, now and in the days to come. I played softball against Joe and Ed years ago in Johnsville. Our paths crossed a few times over the years and it was always good to see Joe on those occasions.

  • I attended Joe’s funeral today; what a joyous celebration of life. Thank you Victoria and Overholt family for witnessing to all of us in your time of sorrow. Joe’s legacy will live on and on through your precious family. May God bless and kiss all your tears.

  • Overholt family,
Pastor Joe married Josh and I while I was still in high school and Josh had already enlisted into the USAF. My stepdad (Jeff Hunter) had one request about our wedding and it was that Pastor Joe do the ceremony. I asked why and he said he is a man of God who loves his wife, he takes good care of his family and his church, and he has many children some that are teenage girls so the two of you will listen to what he as to say! We were married in 1999 and did our time in the military we came back to Fredericktown in 2014 and ran into him. We reintroduced ourselves and introduced our 3 children to him. The following week we saw him at a basketball game and he gave me a hug and apologized for not remembering us right away he then said he was honored to have been a part in our marriage because he recognized our love for each other as it was similar to theirs when they were young.

We are sorry for your loss of this amazingly loving man.

  • Vic, here I am, reading all these condolences again. Of course, agreeing with all of them. The ones that say “we are all better because we knew him” are so true! I loved him dearly, as I do you, there will never be another like him. He loved you and his family immeasurably! He always made everyone feel special! What a gift he had! What a gift he was to all who knew him!
To Joe, until we meet again, God Bless!

    Love you all!
