Joseph J. Pangallo

Joseph J. Pangallo, 97, of Galion, died Wed. May 6, 2009 at Mill Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Galion after a brief illness.
Born June 29, 1911 in Galion, he was the son of the late Dominic Pangallo and Bruna Tuscan Pangallo. He married Barbara Lemon Stringfellow Pangallo on May 26, 1945 and she survives.
Joe graduated from Galion High School in 1931 and first served two years in the National Guard. After his discharge in 1941 he joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 serving as a Gunners Mate until 1945. He was a life member of Galion Elks Lodge 1191; American Legion Scarbrough Post 243, V.F.W. Post 4329; Moose Lodge 303, all in Galion and the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Galion.
Joe was an avid golfer participating until he was 95 years of age. He was known as “Galion’s Golden Boy” when he was a Golden Gloves Boxer nicknamed “Smilin Joe” due to his smile when he knocked out his opponent. He owned Galion’s first gym and was ahead of his time in many ways later boxing professionally. Always a devoted family man, Joe was kind, soft hearted and supportive of his wife, children, grandchildren and his many friends.
He retired from the former Pangallo Lanes in Galion. Prior to that he managed Galion Elk’s Lodge for six years and he and his brother, Pat owned and operated the former Sportsman’s Grill in Galion.
He is survived by two daughters, Kathy and Tim Breckner and Patricia Wirick and Roger Petrella all of Galion; one step-son, Kenneth H. and Leslie Stringfellow of Pollock Pines, Calif.; six grandchildren, Christopher Wirick, Timothy Lynn Breckner, JoAnna Rich Lencyk, Jennifer Breckner, Tom Stringfellow and Ann Bieg; six great-grandchildren, Jack, Joseph and Anabelle Lencyk, Kristopher Stringfellow and Katie and Hannah Bieg; five nieces, Susan Ubri of Toledo, Sharon Simes of Florida; Linda Cortez of Gypsum, Colo. and Valerie Swartz and Jill Baker both of Galion and two nephews, Tom Faine of Calif. and Patrick Pangallo, Jr. of Galion.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Patrick Pangallo and Michael Pangallo, two sisters, Cleora Pangallo and Josephine Coleman and one grandson, Kenneth Stringfellow.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2009 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father John Brennen officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
A vigil service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Friday at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home with Deacon, Greg Kirk officiating.
