Joseph S. “Smythe” DeVoe, age 86, of Mount Vernon passed away on Sunday morning, January 18, 2015 at the Ohio Eastern Star Home. He was born on November 9, 1928 in Mount Vernon, son of the late John and Florence (Durbin) DeVoe.

Smythe honorably served his country in the Army during the Korean War. He retired from Midwest Packaging and was faithful member of Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. He played the piano and would often lend his talents to the Ohio Eastern Star Home. Smythe enjoyed gardening and the great outodoors.

Smythe is survived by his daughter, Jolyn (Jerry) Pierce of Utica; granddaughter, Samantha Piece of Utica; and a brother-in-law, Marion “Bud” (Mary Jane) McKenzie of Mount Vernon.

In addition to his parents, Smythe was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn (McKenzie) DeVoe and a son, Daniel DeVoe.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2014 at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Rev. Father Vincent Nguyen as the Celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
