Jonathan Mark Thomas

August 02, 1957 ‒ October 07, 2021

Centerburg, Ohio

Jonathan “Mark” Thomas of Centerburg Ohio, passed away Thursday, October 7th, 2021 at the age of 64.

Mark was born in Louisville, KY to parents, Robert “Paul” and Yvonne “Bonnie” (O’Bryant) Thomas. When Mark was six years old the family moved to Westerville Ohio, where Mark would grow up and graduate from Westerville High School.

Not one to be subtle about anything, Mark was the definition of “Larger than Life” both in form and personality. He was a man of extremes and could be intimidating, but, after working through his tough exterior, you found a giving friend who would do anything for you and often did, helping many, with his big and generous heart!

An ornery kid at heart, being in his presence was hardly dull! He wasn’t afraid to push boundaries, break rules or get himself (and you) into trouble. He rarely took such things too seriously. It wasn’t unheard of for him to have you fuming, as he let out a big bellied laugh!

Mark was a determined and successful entrepreneur, starting Thomas Excavating, LLC in 1987. A successful business still in operation today.

To Mark, everything was a competition, especially if he could turn it into a race: family vacations, running to the grocery store, grocery carts, riding ATVs, an electric scooter, etc….it didn’t matter, it was a race and he was going to win and have fun doing it! This may explain why he was such a big fan of NASCAR and especially Dale Earnhardt. He met him several times and even had dinner with the 7-time champion on multiple occasions. It would seem that “Intimidators” are drawn to one another.

Above all else though, Mark loved his family!! He lived intentionally and loved deeply! He adored his loving wife, children and his granddaughter, they meant everything to him and he cherished them and loved them with his whole heart!

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Larry “Duane” Thomas and sister, Marci Blubaugh.

Mark leaves behind his wife, Molly (James), his two children, Juli Louise and Christopher Clay Thomas; step-son, Charlie Foster; and granddaughter, Mira; brothers and sisters-in-law, Scott and Anne Thomas of Centerburg, Ohio, Doug and Debbie Thomas of Delaware, Ohio and Fern Thomas of Lake City, FL; brother-in-law, Michael Blubaugh or Utica, OH; the mother of his children, Michele (DeMatteis) Thomas; along with many nieces and nephews, many extended family, friends and business associates, all of whom were influenced by Mark’s love and life.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM on Friday, October 15th, 2021 at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 637 Ohio 61, (at SR 3), Sunbury Ohio 43074.  The Funeral Service will begin at 11 AM on Saturday at Genoa Baptist Church, 7562 Lewis Center Rd, Westerville, OH 43082.  Pastor Frank Carl officiating.  Interment to follow at Mt Pleasant Cemetery, 5697 Condit Road, Centerburg, Ohio 43011

  • I will carry fond memories of time spend with Mark .
Throwing my bike in the back of his truck
Passing the time those summer days so long ago laughing ,talking and long drives in the country.
May the care and love of those around you provide
Comfort and peace to get you through the days ahead.
    My sincere condolences.

  • Our special condolences to allá membets of Mark’s family in these Moments. May patience and love guard You all. From Bogotá, María and Guillermo.

  • You could have knocked me over with a feather when my brother sent this sad news to me tonight. His younger brother Scott and I were thick as thieves in high school. I remember looking up to Mark, his orange jeep and its big tires and thinking how cool he was. Mark was larger than life and heaven just received an angel with a real big wing span! God Bless!

  • Molly and family,
I decided to visit the Fresenius Center yesterday and was shocked and saddened by the news of Mark’s passing. I remember all of us sitting in the waiting room when Mark and Bette were starting dialysis. After their times changed I didn’t see Mark except on a few times if I took Bette early. I value the times of sharing we had. May God bless you all.
