John R. Myers, age 80, of Eastmoor Drive, Mount Vernon passed away on Tuesday October 30, 2007 at his residence following several months of failing health. He was born on April 28, 1927 in Centerburg, Ohio to the late William and Thelma (Sharp) Myers. John grew up mostly in Knox County and the Mount Vernon area. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was assigned to the USS Humphrey in the South Pacific. John retired after 11 years of employment with the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation as a case examiner at the Mansfield office. He also worked numerous years for G. R. Smith Hardware in Mount Vernon. John enjoyed golf and visiting with his family in his other free time. He was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and was active in the choir for many years.
He is survived by two daughters, Jody (Jerry) Forman Fall of Hamilton, Ohio, Carol Ann (Alan) Ward of Philadelphia, Mississippi, three sons, William Myers of Aiken, South Carolina, Allen (Ruth Ann) Myers of Mount Vernon and Michael (Sherry) Myers of Fredericktown, three grandchildren, Angela Myers, Jay Myers and Taylor Ward.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Mary Jane Myers, a sister, Libby Rader and a grandson, Rob Forman.
A memorial service will be held on Friday at 11 AM at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 110 East Vine Street, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050 where friends may call one hour prior. Rev. Jamie Gump will be officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow in Mound View Cemetery. The Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
