John R. Coning

John Robert Coning, age 67, died peacefully January 31, 2017, at Waterford at Mansfield Senior Living in Mansfield, Ohio.  He fought a tough battle with pulmonary fibrosis for two and one half years.

John was the second child of Marjorie (Baker) and Robert C. Coning (both deceased) and was born in Galion, Ohio, September 13, 1949.  He grew up in Mount Gilead, Ohio, where he began his love of sports.  He graduated from Mount Gilead High School in 1967 and he attended Morehead State University in Kentucky where he played football and studied secondary education.  He worked with several construction companies and has built houses in the Lexington area as well as highway bridges in West Virginia and commercial buildings in Kansas and Alaska.

In May of 2000 John married his high school sweetheart, Becky Cronenwett Gorenc, and they spent over 13 years together making many happy memories before Becky’s death in March 2014.

John enjoyed time with the grandchildren and was especially happy with his and Becky’s retirement to Florida from Kansas where he could play as much golf as he liked.  John had many loyal friends and he enjoyed keeping in touch with them through Facebook.

John is survived by 4 children – Todd (Corinne) Coning of Suwanee, Georgia; Chad Coning of Oklahoma; Trisha (fiancee Chad Wickham) Cartmell of Zanesville, Ohio; and Amber (Brandon) Nicoletti of Lexington, Ohio; 2 step-daughters – Shelley (Matt)Palubicki of Texas and Megan (Kirt) Matson of Kansas; 10 grandchildren -Trexton, Trevor, Travis, Lynsie, Logan. Leila, Gracie, Darby, Kasey and Kaitlyn; 5 step-grandchildren – Henry, Eloise, Violet, Charlotte andMaren; a sister – Ginny (Terry) Manning of Lilburn, Georgia;2 sisters-in–law – Roxie (Mike) Hord and Gloria (Gary) Johnson and his mother-in-law, Anna Mary Cronenwett, all of Florida.

John’s family will greet friends from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2017, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead.  A memorial service to honor and celebrate his life will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Irene Scaramazza, Kindred Chaplain, officiating.

  • I’m so sorry to hear about John’s passing, I’m sure everyone in the class of 67 will miss him at our 50th class reunion this year. We have lost so many this last 5 years. My prayers are with him and the family.

  • John was a neighbor when Chad, Trisha, and Amber were growing up. I always knew him a thoughtful neighbor and a great dad being so involved with the kids and their sports. Prayers to his children and grandchildren which I am sure were the lights of their grandfather eyes!
