John Lester “Sonny” Vernon, age 70, of Columbus Road, Mount Vernon, passed away on Friday, October 8, 2010 at his home with his wife and friends at his side.
He was born on September 25, 1940 in Murray City, Ohio to the late William and Evelyn (Wilson) Vernon. John moved to Mount Vernon in 1942. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1958, and joined the Army in October 1958. He also graduated from Central Texas College in 1979.
John was in the Army for 22 years, from 1958 to 1980, retiring as Sergeant Major. He received many military awards, medals and certificates: Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Medal, and a Vietnamese Honor Medal was presented to him by the Vietnam Military after serving two years in Vietnam. He was an American Exchange Student with the British Army for 27 months. After his military career, he was employed as a teacher by the Richmond, Virginia Public School System.
He moved back to Mount Vernon in 1999. On December 16, 2000 he married Carma (Partin) Vernon. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, serving his country and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a very kind, loving and giving person and will be sadly missed by all.
He is survived by his wife Carma (Partin) Vernon; his son Michael Vernon of Key West, FL; his step-daughter Lynnette Aune of Mount Vernon; his grandchildren, Megan Aune, Monica Durbin, Amanda (Nick) Miller, Autumn Durbin, Aric Durbin and Matthew Durbin; his brother David (Carol) Vernon of Mount Vernon; his sister Suzie (Larry) Snow of Howard; his father-in-law Harold Bolyard of Wakeman; his special, devoted friends Bob Durbin, Dave McMahon and his special Toy Poodle, Napoleon; brothers and sisters-in-law Harold (Janet) Bolyard of Vermillion, Jerald Bolyard of South Amherst, Bill (Dottie) Bolyard of Wakeman, Joanne (Bob) Ashby of Omaha, NE, Eloise Smyth of Moundsville, WV, Linda (Owen) McMillen of Lewis Center and Dave (Mary) Bolyard of Lorain.
Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother Jack Vernon and three sisters, Jeannie Byall, Lena Bailey and Margaret Thompson.
Friends may call on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home from 11 – 12 PM. A service will follow at 12 PM with Chaplin Ellen Clodfelter officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will be held in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
