John L. Schrader Jr.

December 27, 1943 ‒ July 01, 2014

Ostrander, Ohio

Schrader Panel0001

John L. Schrader Jr., age 70 of Ostrander passed away unexpectedly Tuesday.

He was born on December 27, 1943 in Columbus to the late John and Garnet (Figlestahler) Schrader.  A US Army veteran as a hawk missile crewman for 18 years he worked as a sheet metal journeyman with Local No 24/198 with Julian Speer Co. He then worked as a building HVAC inspector for the City of Columbus, retiring as a corrections officer with the Delaware County Sheriff office.  John also served as a reserve police officer with the Columbus Police Dept. An avid outdoors-man, hunter, and fisherman, John always looked forward to the next adventure. He was a member of the NRA, Ducks Unlimited, and Safari Club International.  His adventures included hunting expeditions far and wide, his trip to South Africa being his favorite.  Over the years he collected numerous trophies, he also raised exotic animals. John would take in and nurture anyone or animal in need. Although determined and strong willed, he was generous to all. Hard working and one who could fix anything, he was often found piddling in his shop or tending to his yard. Happiest on a hunting adventure, he also loved fishing in Canada or spending time at his cabin in Jackson. He was always interested and involved in the activities of his family; they were always his first concern and whom he dearly loved. Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife of 31 years Lorena (Pool), children Larry (Anita) Schrader of Lewis Center, John (Mindi) Schrader III of Columbus, Michelle (Zach) Miller of Ostrander, 6 grandchildren Katie, Nick, Matthew, John, Isaac, Elle, and 3 great-grandchildren. Friends may call Saturday from noon until 2:00 at the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center, 1510 W. William St. at Valleyside Dr., Delaware where services will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Celebrant Don Lockwood officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to the Central Ohio Diabetes Assoc. or the American Heart Assoc. Condolences may be expressed at

  • Very sorry for your loss, Michelle. I remember you often relayed humorous moments with your father to us HR ladies… sometimes rolling your eyes or shaking your head in disbelief, but always with a smile. I hope the good memories are able to help you through this.

  • Sorry for your loss, I’ll always remember the way he would light up when we “talked hunting”….he was a joy to be around and will be dearly missed!

  • To the Schrader family,
On behalf of the whole Stack family, we send our deepest sympathy and prayers to all in the sudden loss of John. As kids, we all grew up as neighbors on Princeton Ave in Columbus and attended Holy Family school. My parents were close life-long friends with his mom & dad, and in fact, “Bud” and Garnet built their house at Buckeye Lake only a few doors down from my folks after our family had moved from Columbus in the 60s. May the comfort and love of God be with you all at this difficult time.

  • Larry, John & Michelle,
Words can’t express the sorrow for the loss of your Father. He was a very special person to so many people in his life, with all the kindness, humor and love that he gave unselfishly. A great hunter, fisherman, and superb outdoorsman, are just a small tribute of your amazing Dad and a special friend. We extend our deepest sympathy and prayers for you and your family. May God bless and comfort you in this sadness.

  • Dear Larry, Anita, Katie, and Nick,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, as you mourn the unexpected passing of your Dad/Grandfather. Cherish your memories, and allow the love of family and friends to help you through the next few days.

    Donna and Michael Hanrahan
