John L. Salyers

MANSFIELD:  John L. Salyers, age 84, of Mansfield passed away Sunday evening, June 15, 2014 in Winchester Terrace Nursing Home surrounded by his family.

He was born July 26, 1929 in Carter County, Kentucky, one of ten children to the late Harry and Many Summers (Thompson) Salyers.

A U.S. Army veteran, John served two years during Korea and was honorably discharged in 1953.

John lived in Champaign County, Ohio until 2003, where he operated a farm and also worked at Lewis Systems.  He knew how to live off the land, putting out a huge garden every spring to provide food for his family, as well as teaching his girls the value of hard work.  He as a self taught handy man who used his talents in home improvement to flip houses for a profit, long before it was trendy.  He also enjoyed hunting.

John is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law Diana and Norman Brassfield of Dayton, Karen and Curtis Carpenter of Mansfield, and Donna Pack of Delaware, a brother and sister-in-law James and Loretta Salyers of Beaver Creek, nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

In addition to his wife of nearly 60 years, Opal Conley Salyers, he was preceded in death by a daughter Teresa Huffman in 1994, and eight of his siblings.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family in Lantz Cemetery, where Mr. Salyers will receive graveside military honors.  His grandson, Wayne Carpenter will speak.    The Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral home is honored to serve the Salyers family, and condolences to them may be made by
