John D. Scott

October 05, 1925 ‒ October 06, 2021

Mansfield, Ohio

John D. Scott peacefully passed away on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, under the care of Kindred Home and Hospice the day after his 96th birthday.

John was born on October 5, 1925, in Dillon County, South Carolina, the son of French & Lula Mae (Church) Scott. He was drafted into the Army during World War II and took basic training in Camp Wheeler, Georgia for six weeks and was sent to the European front aboard the USS WestPoint. His unit was preparing to ship out to Japan when the war ended and John was then stationed in Italy until his honorable discharge in 1946.

He took a job at a pool hall where he met Josephine Strickland who worked in a nearby restaurant. He fell in love with Jo and asked her to move to Ohio with him. The couple were married on July 30, 1948, and welcomed three boys to the family.

In 1954, John accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and soon after was ordained as a Deacon in the East Hamilton Baptist Church and served there until 1956 when he moved to Mansfield. He was an active member of Lincoln Heights Baptist Church in Mansfield where he also served as Deacon.

John worked 35 years for General Motors moving from 3rd shift Production to Welder Maintenance to Journeyman to Foreman and finally retiring as General Supervisor in 1982. He was a founding manager of the Auto Credit Union in Mansfield. After retiring, John and Jo moved to Georgetown, South Carolina. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and traveling with Jo.  Favorite memories were made in Alaska, the Appalachian Mountains, Myrtle Beach, Hawaii and aboard different cruise ships.

Regarding his family, it’s best to use John’s own words: “I have the best 3 boys that anyone could want and all of our daughters-in-law are like daughters (not in-laws). We have 3 granddaughters and 2 grandsons. They are just super.  We also have 5 great-grandchildren; they are just unbelievable. To everyone I want to say, ‘ “We love all of you so very much. It has been a blessing in both of our lives to have all of you in our lives.” ‘

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Don & Jan Scott of Petaluma, CA, Rick (Pete) & Patti Scott of Bellville, OH and John Kevin Scott of Mount Vernon, OH; grandchildren Jessica, Michele, Jonathan, Joseph, Jennifer; and five great grandchildren: Chloe, Dylan, Dayton, Evan and Cal.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Jo Scott; daughter-in-law Diane Scott; siblings Dennis Scott, Everrett Scott, Louvenia Avant, Raveneal Scott, Deleon Scott, R.M. Scott, and Duey Scott.

A private family graveside service will be held 1:00 PM on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens (18260 Coshocton Ave, Mt Vernon, OH 43050) with military honors performed by Knox County Joint Veterans Council and the service will be officiated by Pastor Matt Otto.
