Joel D. Johnson, age 83, of Danville, Ohio formerly of Mount Vernon passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at the Delaware Court Health Care Center.  He was born on November 9, 1936 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Dr. Josiah and Margaret (Wiseman) Johnson.  Joel was a graduate of Ligonier High School in Pennsylvania and he dutifully and proudly served in the United States Army as a MP stationed in Germany.

Joel was employed in the telecommunications industry for many years. He retired from Nortel Networks, Inc.  He enjoyed golfing, watching and cheering on his beloved Steelers, reading, playing cards and eating good food. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather that will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife Mary (Gailor) Johnson, whom he married on February 14, 1971; a son, David (Carla) Johnson of Richwood; a daughter, Jennifer Johnson of Columbus; three grandchildren, Bodie Johnson, twins, Isaac and Isabella Johnson and many other family members and longtime friends.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, William Johnson, Richard Johnson and a half brother, J. Barton Johnson.

The family will observe a Celebration of Life service at a later date.  The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home of Mount Vernon is honored to serve the family of Joel D. Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Joel’s name may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
