Joe G. Ballard Sr., age 84 of Delaware, died peacefully Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at Highbanks Care Center in Worthington, Ohio.

He was born on June 6, 1924 in Winston Salem, NC to the late Charles and Lillie Mae (Richardson) Ballard. A US Army Air Force veteran of WW II, he served as an airplane mechanic and equipment operator. Originally from Columbus, he moved to N. Old State Rd in 1966 prior to becoming a Delaware resident.

On August 14, 1955 he married his beloved wife of 53 years, Grace B. (Cobb), who survives him. Grace is grateful to the Lord for leading him into the lives of her and her daughter.

Joe worked 43 years as a service man for Columbia Gas, 30 years in Bexley and 13 years in Delaware. He was a simple, humble and selfless man. He joined the Eastwood Seventh-day Adventist church in 1953 and will be remembered as a devoted deacon who gave to others with no limitations. A gifted woodworker, he enjoyed finishing and refinishing oak furniture, and making treasures of items discovered while at work for Columbia Gas. As he described, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

In addition to his wife he is also survived by daughters Diana White of Westerville and Sharon Bell of Colton, CA; sons Joe Jr. of Sun City West, AZ and Charles Ballard of California; 14 Grandchildren including Adam White of Columbus, and 13 Great-grandchildren; brothers Frances of Sneedville, TN, and Charles Jr. of Mocksville, NC.

Also preceded in death by brothers Rosco, Wilson, and half-brother: Paul.

Friends may call Friday 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 75 W. William St. (SR 36), Delaware and Saturday one hour prior to the 10:00 a.m. funeral services at the Eastwood Seventh-day Adventist Church, 6400 Sunbury Rd. South, Westerville, Ohio 43081, with interment in Green Mound Cemetery near Kilbourne.
