Jodene Lyn Southward

May 31, 1951 ‒ August 21, 2021

Marion, Ohio

The loving mother, grandmother, and sister, Jodene Lynn Southward, age 70, of Marion, was reunited with her loving Lord on Saturday, Aug 21, 2021 at Riverside Methodist Hospital after an extended illness.

Jodene was born in Delaware, Ohio on Saturday, May 31, 1951 to the late Robert Louise and Mildred Lucille (Stevens) Wood.  She attended Marion City Schools where she graduated from Harding High School in 1970.  While in high school Jodene worked as a Nurses Aide for Community Hospital.

To say Jodene was a wonderful woman is an understatement.   She would offer anyone the shirt off of her back and loved her family more than anything.  She was a meticulous housekeeper and would organize her kitchen at least one a week. When Jodene wasn’t with her family, she could often be found with her best friends, the late Sharon Hart, Shirley Good and Patty Cramer.  Together, these three would enjoy meals out (especially to Arby’s for a roast beef sandwich) and hit any BINGO Hall they could find.

As a woman of faith, Jodene was a longtime member of Grace Baptist Church in Marion where she faithfully attended.  Here, she married the love of her life, Phillip Southward, on June 27, 1998. Jodene and Phillip spent countless hours together with their large combined family.  Jodene was always up for a game of UNO and was known for never losing.  Phillip passed away January 14, 2013.

Jodene worked for more than 30 years for the Marion City School.  She loved helping others and was a perfect fit for her many roles.  She worked as a cook for many years, followed by helping as a teacher aide.  She later finished her career as a bus aide.  Her kind heart made her a mother to all students especially those with special needs.

Jodene will be missed by her children, Jason (Connie) West of Marion and Kellie (James) Roush of Morral; step-children, David (Kristi) Southward and Tanya Belcher; grandchildren, Ryan (Melissa Lindsay) Stewart, Corbin West, Dillon West, Reed Roush, James (Kendra) Roush Jr., Travis Roush, Amber Smith, Zach Smith, Brenna Southward, and Audrey Southward; great-grandchildren, Avery Stewart, Ashton Stewart and Alaia Smith; siblings who were by her side during her entire illness, Carl Wood and Marge Retterer, coutless nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jodene was preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Kathryn Wood and brother-in-law, Dale Retterer. On August 24, 2021 her beloved dog, Trixy followed her mommy into heaven.

Private family visitation will be held at Snyder Funeral Homes, Gunder/Hall Chapel with burial at Marion Cemetery.  Pastor David Rush, Jodene’s lifelong friend, will officiate.

Donations may be made in Jodene’s honor and written out to Marion City Schools to help students with Special Needs.  They may be mailed or dropped off to Harding High School.  1500 Harding Hwy. E., Marion, OH 43302

  • Jodene and I went to Harding together. I remember her as a kind, sweet girl. We met up again when my boys were in school and when we attended Grace Baptist. She still had that same kind, sweet spirit. I am sure that our Lord Jesus met her with arms wide opened. Well done Jodene..welcome home. Carol Price Miller.

  • I met Jodene when I was a teacher’s aide at Harding High School. and she was a student. We met again at Oakland Elem. when I had the privilege of being the K teacher for both Kelly and Jason. In both situations she was a caring. loving, devoted, and conscientious lady. She took great pride in doing a job well, and wanted the best for her family. My sympathy to Kelly and Jason – she was so proud of you -, as well as the rest of the family who will miss her tremendously. May you find comfort and peace in the happy memories that remain in your heart.
