Delaware, Ohio

Mary “JoAnn” Schaefer, age 98 formerly of Lincoln Ave. in Delaware passed away peacefully Sunday evening, June 3, 2012 at Sarah Moore Home, where she had resided for the past 5 years.

She was born on March 2, 1914 in Marion to the late Chester L. and Clara (Yochem) Fuller. Joann graduated from St. Mary High School in 1931.

A women of deep faith, she was a steadfast member of St. Mary Church. Considered a mother too many more than her own, she was loved by countless children. Joann worked for over 20 years as the secretary for the St. Mary School, freely providing hugs, care to those who were sick, and provided lunch money to those who had none. She also worked as a secretary for 5/3 Third Investments.

As one who loved the sunshine, she was always on the go; often replying to invitations with “don’t ask me if you do not want me”, with her trademark warm smile. She favored Hilton Head and spending time at Lake Erie. She found enjoyment playing bridge, gardening, and spending time with her treasured family.

Her home was the family gathering place, the place to go for Easter Egg Hunts and the Delaware Horse Parade. Always neighborly, she enjoyed time on her front porch, waiving to passers bye and showing interest to all. But her kitchen was where she was at her best. Her famous mashed potatoes, Texas sheet cake, corn beef cabbage; Boston cream pie will long be remembered. She used tomatos from her garden for the spaghetti sauce, and no one could make a better pot roast. Joan was happiest in her kitchen, but she held all children close to her heart, especially her own.

She is survived by her beloved children: Geraldine A. Schaefer, Jackie Kuhns, Jeffrey M. Schaefer, and J. Joel (Laurie) Schaefer all of Delaware, precious grandchildren: J. Fred Milan, Shane (Annette) Kuhns, Aaron Kuhns, Leslie (Patrick) Bennett, Justin, Mark (Jennifer), and Jennifer Schaefer (fiancé Myles Vander Weele), sister: Janet Frentsos of Delaware, sister-in-law: Theresa Walsh of Goshen, NY, many treasured nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog, Itty Bitty.

Joann was preceded in death by her husband of almost 43 Years: John on June 4, 1982, son Jon in 2008, son-in-law Dennis Kuhns in 1994, sister Betty Law, and sister-in-law: Bernadette Weinheimer.
