Jessie Belt

February 24, 1929 ‒ October 31, 2016

Mansfield, Ohio

MANSFIELD:  The best teachers are those who show you where to look, but don’t tell you what to see. Though she only taught one year of fourth grade in Portland, Oregon as a young woman, Jessie Belt spent her lifetime educating by directing others where to look. By modeling grace and joy and compassion and loving kindness, her family and friends saw a life characterized by contentment and love. She taught them well.

With her lessons complete, Jessie passed into the Lord’s presence Monday, October 31, 2016 from Brookdale Center Pointe in Tallahassee, Florida. She was 87.

Born Jessie Bennett February 24, 1929 in Aberdeen, SD to Jay and Vinnie (Royer) Bennett, she earned her degree in Political Science from the University of Oregon. It was there at college she met a young medical student, Richard Bryson Belt, and the two were married July 6, 1951.

His practice brought them to Mansfield, where Jessie, busy raising four active sons, was immersed in the social scene. She was a member of PEO, DAR, Garden Club, Westbrook Country Club, and Mansfield General Hospital Auxiliary.  A member of First Congregational Church, she more recently had been attending Grace Church of Tallahassee.

Once the boys were raised, she returned to work, helping Richard in his medical practice. Jessie could be found at the reception desk or filling any number of roles in the office.

Remembered as a delightful friend, warm and wonderful mother, and supportive and loving wife, Jessie’s love and joy are her legacy.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Richard, Jr & Catherine Belt of Mansfield, James & Tracie Belt of St. Petersburg, FL, Frank & Sheri Belt of Tallahassee, FL and Rob Belt of Kansas City, Kansas; grandchildren Elizabeth Belt of Mansfield, Richard “R.B.” & Whitney Belt, III of Mansfield, Casey & Jorge Giroud of St. Petersburg, FL, Chelsey Belt of Tallahassee, FL, Tom Belt of Kansas City, KS and Kelsey Belt of Lawrence, KS; great grandchildren Lucas and Juliana Giroud; and her sister Ann Simpson of Honolulu, HI.

She was preceded in death by her dear husband Richard B. “Dick” Belt, Sr., M.D. on September 13, 2011. Also deceased is her sister Dorothy Heller.

The Belt family will receive friends Friday, November 4, 2016 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where her funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. The Rev. Bruce Haapalainen will officiate. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery.

Contributions in Mrs. Belt’s memory to benefit First Congregational Church may be made at the funeral home.

Snyder Funeral Home is honored to serve the Belt family. Send them a fond memory or note of support online at: SnyderFuneralHomes.com

  • Dear cousins, I am sorry for your loss. I remember Aunt Jessie as a bright, lovely and interesting woman. I only spent time with her once in my adult life at a reunion of sorts in Hermiston in 1993, but I have some nice photos–one of which is on the wall in my hallway! Losing your mother is so difficult… life will never be quite the same. Sending my condolences and love. I wish I could be there with you.

  • Sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in the Bible’s promise at Revelation 21:4 “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”
