Jerry Burkhart, 73, of Galion passed away Sunday, December 9, 2018 at Woodside Village in Mt. Gilead after failing health.

Born May 8, 1945 in Harlan, Kentucky he was the son of Grover and Ida (Smith) Burkhart. He graduated from Colonel Crawford High School in 1963 and was a police officer for Galion Police Department for 30 years retiring as a Lieutenant in 2000.

A member of Galion Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jerry was a student pilot and a former shareholder of Galion Air, Inc.

He is survived by his son Adam Burkhart of Galion; five grandchildren Taylor, Shelby, Gavin, Caiden and Connor Burkhart and three sisters, Gail Pritchard of Ashland, Carol Chumley of Speedwell, Tennessee and Bernice Ireland of Crestline.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, C J. Burkhart and a sister, Billie Burkhart.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at Richardson Davis Chapel of Snyder Funeral Homes, 218 South Market St., Galion, Ohio 44833. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, December 14, at Coffey Mortuary, 116 Beech Street, Harrogate, Tennessee where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will follow at Robertson Cemetery, Speedwell Tennessee.

  • To the families of Jerry my deepest condolences, we attended the same schools, Leesville, North Robinson,Colonel Crawford,and I was best friends with his sister, Bernice, for some years .
    Jerry and I also worked together later at The Galion PD.
    It is never easy to lose a loved one .

    I was shocked to hear the news of your fathers passing. I have many memories of Jerry at the PD through the years. I enjoyed working with him and knew if I needed back-up I could always count on him. There is no doubt in my mind he will do the same at the pearly gates! Rest in peace, you answered the final call Lt. Jerry Burkhart.

    The pain will always remain, cherish all the lifelong memories! My deepest heartfelt sympathy to you and the family.
