Jeffrey Charles Higley

March 27, 1941 ‒ January 25, 2018

Delaware, Ohio

Jeffrey Charles Higley left this earth on January 25, 2018, after a brief battle with pancreatic and liver cancer, and the complications of a stroke.

Born at home in Marion, Ohio on March 27, 1941 to Robert W. and Anna M. (Hepner) Higley of Marion.

Jeff grew up in Marion and attended St. Mary’s Elementary and Marion Catholic High School, class of 1959, and was the senior class president. He was a lifetime member of Delaware St. Mary Catholic Church. He worked at the Isaly Dairy Company and was the assistant manager of the East Center Street Store. He also worked at the Servex Electronics store on North Prospect Street.

In October 1963, Jeff enlisted in the United States Navy. He completed boot camp and Electronics Technical School at the US Navy Training Center at Great Lakes, IL. After graduation he was sent to Naples, Italy and assigned to NATO’S Allied Forces Southern Europe. Jeff spent two and one-half years there as an electronics technician in telecommunications. He achieved the rank of E5, 2nd Class Petty Officer (ETN2). He was honorably discharged in October 1967.

While stationed in Naples, Jeff met Anna Domenica Talamo. They were married July 8, 1967. Mr. and Mrs. Higley returned to the States in October. Jeff found work at The North Electric Company in Galion, OH. Their three children Charles, Christine, and April were born in Galion.

In 1971, North Electric transferred Jeff to their new R&D facility in Delaware, OH. When ITT North Electric closed its doors in 1986, Jeff returned to Galion and worked at the PECO power division (also owned by ITT) until closed by ITT in 1989.

Jeff found a job in the new field of cellular telephone service with Cellular One; this transitioned to Air Touch and Verizon Wireless. He worked in integration engineering in Columbus and was responsible for new site builds in the Cincinnati area. He retired from Verizon in 2004.

Through the years Jeff stayed active playing volleyball at Smith School in the winter and softball with North Electric in the Delaware Industrial League and Miller Sheet Metal in Marion. He coached DYAA soccer in the late 70’s and was a past president of the Delaware DARTS swim club. In his later years, Jeff enjoyed golfing in the Verizon Wireless golf league. He was a big college football fan who favored Ohio State and Notre Dame but enjoyed watching all college games. His other favorite activity was shooting muzzleloading rifles and participating in national primitive rendezvous and living history events; he was an excellent shot regardless of what he was using. He was a long-time member and past president of the Fort Morrow Long Rifles of Delaware and Marion, OH.

After retirement, Jeff took his life-long love of cars and rebuilt a blue 1969 Plymouth Road Runner and a red 1964 Chevrolet Corvair. He entered numerous car shows and brought home many awards for his meticulously maintained historic vehicles. He was a member of the Fly Wheels Hot Rod Club of Marion.

Jeff and Anna enjoyed traveling, notably to Brazil and Italy and cruising the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. But most of all, he enjoyed traveling to Dublin or Cleveland to see a multitude of his eight grandchildren’s sport and school events for the past 19 years. “Papoo and Nonna” were active grandparents in their grandkids’ lives.

Jeff was preceded in death by his grandparents Joseph and Bertha Higley and John and Anna Hepner; his parents Robert and Anna Higley; Aunt Mary and Uncle Merrill Cowgill, and other aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is survived by his wife Anna of 50 years. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 8, 2017. Their children Charles (Andrea)Higley, Christine (Brian) Gorski, April (Bobby) Lewis; grandchildren Samantha and Jacob of Dublin, Sophia, Daniel, and Annalise of Hinckley; Madison, Cassidy, and Robert “Bo” of Mayfield Village; Brothers Joseph (Shirley Hunter) Higley of Marion and Robert (Rhonda Buckner) Higley of Cardington; Nephews Steven (Linda), Joseph and Cody (Megan) Higley; Niece Amanda (Mat) Riechardt, their children Zane and Jace; Sister-in-law Elena Talamo Fricchione of Asola, Italy, and her sons Enzo, Piero and Luigi. Brother-in-law the late Francesso Talamo (Neusa) of Santos, Brazil, their children, Marcello, Adriano, Franchie, Nelisa, Andrea and Fernanda.

Jeff will be sadly missed by family and friends for his friendly smile, his jokes and his laughter.
