Janice C. Erndt

December 12, 1951 ‒ February 09, 2020

Galena, Ohio

Janice C. Erndt, age 68 of Sunbury passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020 following a brief illness, surrounded by her family.

She was born on December 12, 1951 in Richlands, Virginia to the late Raymond Browning and Frances (Shelton) Lowe. A graduate of Clear Fork High School in 1969, she studied at Cincinnati Bible College and graduated from Columbus State College.

A mutual friend introduced her to Tom Erndt. They began dating their senior year in high School. Five years later, they were married in 1973 creating a union of 46 years; a wonderful dream as expressed by Tom.

Janice was a full time mother first and foremost. She also worked with the Sonshine Preschool for 24 years in Sunbury, serving as director for 22 years. A faithful servant of her Lord, she was an active member of Sunbury Christian Church for 39 years. In addition to her preschool duties, she also taught Vacation Bible School, served in the children’s ministries, sang with the Living Water vocal group, and enjoyed her small group family.

She enjoyed a passion for snow skiing and was a member of the Newark Ohio Ski Club. She also enjoyed bowling, watching birds, road trips with her husband on their Harley Davidson, and traveling the world.

Janice was a true people person; she was sought for her advice and Christian witness through her church. She was gifted with the ability to sense peoples pain and counsel them through its midst. Sweet and selfless, she was fun loving, caring, kind, and possessed a gentle spirit.

She was called “Oma”, because she was a grandma to many more than her own.  Janice was a true witness, she was proud of the ministry provided thorough the Sonshine Preschool which brought many families to the Sunbury Christian Church.

Happiest when surrounded by her family around the dinner table, she will be remembered for her love of children, her ministry and caring ways.

Those left to cherish her memory include her beloved husband of Dr. Thomas Erndt, son Dr. Aaron (Cindy) Erndt of Galena, daughter Katie (David) Evener of Galena, 4 grandchildren: Sophia and Sam Erndt, Franklin and Magdaleane Evener, siblings: Kenneth Browning and Earshel Browning, Violet & Kip Bowman all of Bellville, aunts: Barb and John Faber of Sunbury, Oma Goodman of Butler, uncle Ira and Treva Shelton of Millersburg and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her step-father Melvin “Gene” Lowe.

Friends may call from 4 – 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12, at the Sunbury Christian Church, 870 Admiral Dr., Sunbury, Ohio 43074 and one hour prior to the 3:00 p.m. Thursday funeral services which will also be held at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home in Sunbury

Memorial contributions and be made to Sonshine Preschool, 250 Rainbow Ave., Sunbury, Ohio  43074.

  • Our hearts hurt for the family. I attended Tom and Jans beautiful wedding. And Duane and I have had great times with all in this family, especially John and Barb Faber. Our deepest sympathy goes out to this lovely family that I have known and loved a little more than 50 years. Frances gave my son Sean his first bath when he was 1 week old. We dearly loved her. Jan a real sweet lady and her sister Violet Bowman. Our thoughts and prayers are with this family. God bless Jan and her devotion to her church and the children she so enjoyed.

  • Our family will never forget Jan. She exuded kindness and love everywhere she went. She was adored and loved by so many including our family. We are forever changed by her love and generosity. So very sorry for your families loss but so thankful for her strong faith in our father. ❤️ With love, The Shofners

  • My sincerest condolences. Jan was such a sweet person and always made me feel welcomed at the beginning of my Christian walk. I will never forget her compassion and acceptance to all. Many prayers to Tom and family. God bless you all.

  • I was so shocked and saddened from hearing about Jan’s passing. Her kind and contagious smile will forever be missed. She touched so many lives as a youth leader and I know she has touched so many more lives since then. Tom, Aaron & Katie, you are all in my prayers as you grieve the loss of such a special woman. Heaven definitely gained an angel.

  • So sorry to hear of Jan’s passing – not sorry for her as she is in a better place with our Father – but sorry for those of us left behind with our memories. My family met Tom and Jan when Tom was at Palmer College in Davenport, IA. We have so many memories of them. We cared for Aaron when Katie was born and watched as both of the “kids” grew into fine young people. They actually felt like a part of the Albert family. We became their home away from home and have remained so for many, many years. Tom, Aaron, and Katie, your families are in our prayers. I will miss her very much.

    Love and prayers,
    Linda (Albert) Drowns

  • Our deepest condolences to the Erndt family.

May God give your entire family strength and courage in the days ahead and may they feel Your love surrounding each of them. Tom – our hearts hurt for you sweet friend. May God carry you through today and the days to follow. All our love and condolences to your entire family and friends, Teresa and Keith Barnett.

  • I will never forget the dearest of friendships that were made with Tom and Jan during a military tour of duty
In 1975. They were our sponsors and made being far away from home bearable…they became our family and we love them dearly. We didn’t see as much of them after days of service because we were all busy raising children…in the last two years we have reconnected and in effect, picked up where we left off. This news about our dear Jan is both shocking and devastating!
You have left us too soon, but please know we are praying for God to hold you close and we will wrap our own arms around Tom on earth because we know it was hard to leave him and your family. God has a plan, even though it may be hard to understand…some day we hopefully will be enlightened to the plan…love you Jan…
    Pam & Mike Dabbs

  • I watched the video of family highlights of Jan, Tom, Katie and Aaron. It was beautiful and touching. It was also good to see Tom and Jan in their early years. We had many talks over the years. She loved her family so much. She was a great friend and fine example of what a Christian life should be. I have a few remembrances that still grace my home that she bought for me over the years. I will miss her so much, her intimate chats with me and her encouragement when I sometimes lost hope. We’ve laughed and cried together many times. Both Thom and Jan are the finest people I know. I only wish I had more time to share with her. Rest in God’s loving arms my dear Jan. I will remember you always with a smile on my face!
    Love, Elaine

  • Tom, it is with great sorrow I heard of your loss. Angie and I were shocked to hear the news. Our memories go back to that day long ago when we reported to Ft. Sill when Jan was so kind to Angie and I. We spent Basic together and we lived next door to each other. Jan and Angie got to know one other as you and I went through the course. We remember going out for ice cream in those hot Oklahoma summer nights and once in a while we took on minature golf. And all through those memories her beautiful kind smile shines still. May God bring you and your family comfot and solace. Although from a distance, please accept a brotherly embrace and our deepest sympathies. Al and Angie Reynoso.

  • Dear Tom and family, I was saddened to learn of your great loss. We’re never ready for it and the only thing that gets us through is our faith. Cindy was a faithful servant of the Lord and I’m sure he welcomed her home with “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” Our joy amidst the grief is that one day we will join our loved ones and never be parted anymore. We sadly say ” there she goes” while on this side and on the other shore she is met with shouts of “her she comes!”
Please know that God will accompany you all in your healing journey of grief and hold you in His loving arms. Christ’s peace be with you all. Rev. Carol (Burns) Kilgore
