Janet R. Valentine

September 09, 1927 ‒ February 28, 2017

Mount Vernon, Ohio

Janet R. Valentine, 89, of Mount Vernon, formerly of Newark died peacefully in her sleep on February, 28, 2017 at Brookdale Senior Living of Mount Vernon. She was born September 9, 1927 in Spokane, Washington to the late Robert and Ellyn (Anderson) Brecken.

Janet and her husband, Lloyd lived in Plain City for twenty years following their retirement and move from Mount Vernon, Ohio. Janet returned to Ohio following Lloyd’s passing.

During her career, Janet worked as the office manager and dental assistant for two dentists. Mom equally enjoyed being a wife and homemaker.

Janet enjoyed playing the organ, golf, swimming, euchre, double solitaire, pinochle and reading. Mom’s favorite of all was the thrill of beating her opponents at the game of double solitaire or pinochle regardless of their “alignment with the center-line of the bath tub.”  Mom was also passionate about her community and served on several home owner and/or resident councils over the years in various capacities.

We could never list all the wonderful things our mother said or did as she continually touched all our lives. She was a devoted wife and mother, and a loving grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed her friends.  Thank you Lord for our mom.

Mom had a deep faith in God, and loved and supported her neighbors, friends and family. She supported her church and was a member of the choir and enjoyed several Bible study groups.

Janet is survived by her loving children, Nancy (Charles) McCluskey Jr. of Mount Vernon, Yvonne (Mike) Hilgeman of Batavia and Janice Heichel of Westerville; 8 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews; and her loving friends and caregivers.

Besides her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her husband and love of her life, Lloyd Valentine; her son-in-law, Thomas Heichel; brother, Robert Brecken; her sisters, and brothers-in-law, Dorothy (Fred) Moore, Mary (Walter) Gillson, Virginia (Harley) Yake and Betty (Claude) Kieffer.

A memorial service will be celebrated on Saturday, March 4, 2017 following calling hours from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 East High St., Mount Vernon. Burial will follow at a later date in The Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida.

Her family would like to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to all of the caregivers at Home Helpers and Brookdale Senior Living for the special attention they gave to Janet.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Janet’s name may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
