Mount Gilead, Ohio

Janet E. Showecker, 56, of Mount Gilead died early Tuesday morning April 8, 2008 at her residence.

She was born on July 8, 1951 in Zanesville, Ohio the daughter of the late James V. Hoffer and Mary (Alexander) Hoffer of Zanesville.

After her graduation from Bishop Rosecrans High School in Zanesville in the class of 1969 she enlisted in the Navy. She found an affinity for the military way of life and made a career out of it; taking retirement after 24 years of service. Her travels took her all over the world; Guam, Italy, Japan, France, Greece, London, and Scotland to name a few.

While in the Reserves Janet met a young Naval Recruiter, Steven C. Showecker. They were married on April 26, 1980 in Zanesville, Ohio. Their military service led them to beautiful parts of the country; Portsmouth, Virginia; Charleston, South Carolina; Hawaii; and Washington State. In 1999 they moved to Mount Gilead.

Janet also worked for Molina and Cigna Healthcare as a Customer Service Representative.

A woman of great faith, Janet was a member of the Sacred Hearts Catholic Church.

Janet was a member of the Mount Gilead Lion’s Club and served as secretary/treasurer before her illness forced her to concede her position. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society of Columbus and Bucyrus and was especially fond of their social time at local restaurants.

With an outgoing personality, Janet will be remembered as a caring, friendly woman who ventured through life with a giving spirit.

Through her struggles with her illness Janet remained strong willed, but also relied heavily on her family for support. She cherished the time spent with them especially walks through the park with her grandson, Antonio.

Left to cherish her memory are her mother Mary; her husband Steven; son James Showecker II of Redmond, Washington; daughter Kelly Showecker at home; grandson Antonio; Brothers Eric Hoffer of Apple Valley, California and Danny Hoffer of Zanesville, Ohio; and sister Diane “Cookie” Searls of Zanesville, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her father James V. Hoffer and her two infant brothers William D. and D. Joseph Hoffer.
