Janet E. Finley

June 24, 1929 ‒ February 23, 2014

Delaware, Ohio

Janet E. Finley, age 84 of Delaware passed away early Sunday morning, February 23, 2014. Surrounded by her family and in the care of Heartland Hospice, she died peacefully at Willow Brook, where she called home.

Born in Bedford, Ohio on June 24, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Lona (Wivelle) Martin. A graduate of Bedford High School in 1947, she was a Rainbow Girl, member of Thespian Society and National Honor Society. She was crowned Bedford Queen and went on to attend Baldwin Wallace College.

Her future father-in-law introduced her to Robert Finley, they were married in 1953. Together they shared 47 wonderful years, caring for each other’s needs and raising a family. They gave unconditionally of their time, talents, and energy, always making the most of what they had. They moved to Delaware in 1990 from Medina and sadly Robert passed away in 2000.

Of Methodist faith, Janet had a heart for Jesus. In her younger years she taught Sunday school and was a Girl Scout leader for her children. Described as the “peace maker”, she was strong willed and always persevered. With her fire red hair she could be feisty and at times ornery, but was always warm hearted.

She held fast to the good deeds and responsibilities of a mother and wife. Janet enjoyed crocheting and knitting. Time spent in the garden was a pleasure, she canned and made jam from those delights, making the most of each one. The past years she enjoyed a passion for bird watching, especially humming birds as she counted and observed each one who paid a visit to her widow side feeder.

Janet happily made it a point to be involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren; in fact her daily routine was set in it. Her family will long remember her tender touch, influence, and presence along each step of their life’s journey.

Those who will forever hold her memory dear include her children Leslie (Deborah) Finley of Findlay, Laura (John) Wilson of Munroe Falls, Lisa (Rick) Gawronski of Dublin, grandchildren Jennifer (Dave) Hoening, Melissa (Joe) Finley Russ, Krista (Chris) Thomas, John R., Emma Wilson, Benjamin, Zachary, and Jack Gawronski, great grandchildren Lilly, Cohen and Weston Hoening.

Graveside services will be observed privately by her family at the New Pittsburg Cemetery in New Pittsburg, Ohio. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center in Delaware.

Memorial contributions can be made to Willow Brook Christian Village, 100 Willow Brook Way S., Delaware, Ohio 43015 or Heartland Hospice, 685 Delaware Ave., Marion, Ohio 43302.
