James M. Rufer

June 29, 1979 ‒ September 27, 2018

Mansfield, Ohio

MANSFIELD: James M. Rufer passed away Thursday, September 27, 2018. He was 39.

He was born June 29, 1979 in Mt. Vernon to parents Jimmy & Susan (Addy) Rufer. After he was graduated from Madison High School with the class of 1997, he went on to study at Ohio State Mansfield where he earned his bachelors in psychology.

James worked for Purism Computers. He was a self-proclaimed geek, and technology was his favorite hobby. He even created a movie about each of the kids’ births including writing a script complete with music and film editing and hosted “geek game nights” with his wife where they and their friends would get together to play board games like Catan, Pandemic and Castles of Mad King Ludwig. James was intelligent and kind hearted and above all else, James loved his family dearly.  His greatest accomplishment in life was being a daddy.

He is survived by his loving wife Mary Rufer; sons Xander and Paxton Rufer; and mother-in-law Sylvia Janosov. As an only child, he had no siblings. However, he is survived by the family he made out of friends including: Rob & Jen Heichel and their 5 children, Jake & Val Schwartfigure and their two daughters and his best friend Justin Smith and his son.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his father-in-law Robert Janosov.

The Rufer family will hold a Celebration of Life honoring James on Saturday, October 6, 2018 beginning at 3 p.m. at the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home (2553 Lexington Avenue in Mansfield) and Pastor Craig Hamm will speak.

  • I finally got to meet James in person this year after working with him remotely. I had always admired his affability, warmth and respect for people, but was really blown away when I got to experience those qualities from him first-hand. I remember how lucky I felt to get to know such a great guy better. How lucky I felt that there was someone at work so capable of bringing those attributes which are all too often missing in our industry. I wish I could preserve that feeling and that memory in a bottle and leave it here for his children so that they could know what a humble and humane man their father was. I hope his family and friends know how much his colleagues appreciated him.

  • My heart goes out to you and the boys, Mary. Sending you comfort, strength and love.

  • During a lifetime one meets a lot of people. Some you like to forget instantaneously again, some you are fine to work with but you don’t want them to be around more than necessary, some are good pals for a party, a hangout or a special occasion, some are great to talk to.

And then there are some people who you simply enjoy having around you whenever and wherever, who fill any room with kindness, understanding and empathy, who make you feel welcome, understood and accepted, unconditionally – this is what James was to me.

I had the honor and pleasure to work with James, mostly remote over the internet, but still his positive energy could always be felt, even through the wires. Just a few weeks ago we finally had the pleasure to meet in person and enjoyed a wonderful time together with the team, which even further increased our bond.

James leaves a big hole in our hearts.
Our thoughts are with his family now, his wife and children.

Farewell James, may peace be with you, we miss you. We will try our best to keep your spirit alive, but it will never be the same without you.

  • Sending Love, Hug’s & Prayer’s to you & the boy’s Mary. I pray that you find peace in the Love that u shared . May his memories keep him alive Forever in your heart. Godspeed !!

I have so many fond memories of the considerable time we spent together back when we were just kids. My deepest condolences go out to James’ sons, family, friends and colleagues. Rest in peace, James, may God’s love fill you and comfort your soul in the next life my friend.

  • I have worked with James over the past 2 years and although I was never in the same room with him I can say he was one of the nicest people i have ever had the pleasure of interacting with. We didn’t just talk shop, we exchanged stories about our kids and everything else. I have lost a good friend, we will really miss you James.

  • So sorry for your loss. While we may not know or understand God’s plan, he will guide you and comfort you! I am sure you have wonderful happy memories and they will comfort you during the rough times. Know I am always here for you! God bless! Sally

  • Ron & I are so sorry for your loss.
I remember James playing ball with all the neighbor boys & our son walking up to Jame’s house to ask him if he wanted to come out & play. The boys even had water fights. They played all summer long.
Our hearts are heavy. Our prayer for you & the boys is that you feel the warmth & love of God’s embrace as He wraps His arms around you.
    With Deepest Sympathy
