James M. Dempsey, age 77, of 506 ½ Braddock Street, Mount Vernon, died Saturday June 15, 2002 at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. James was born September 18, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York to Michael J. and Margaret (Alwill) Dempsey. He was an Army Veteran of World War Two and was awarded the Purple Heart. James was retired from Cooper Energy Services in Mount Vernon and the Gambier Post Office where he had been employed as a clerk

He was a member of the Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon where he served as a church reader.

Surviving are his wife Dorothy (DeWinter) Dempsey whom he married May 16, 1947; his daughter Denise (Robert) Gallagher of Mount Vernon; two grandchildren Wade (Jenny) Gallagher and Destiny (Jason) Smith; four great grandchildren Kaila Gallagher, Arissa Gallagher, Tyler Smith and Zachary Smith; two sisters Margaret O’Connor of Long Island, N.Y. and Dorothy (Lucien) Beauregard of New Bedford, Mass.

There will be no calling hours, A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at 10 AM at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.

The Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon is assisting the family with arrangements.
