James “Jim” Herbert Umbarger

LEXINGTON: James “Jim” Herbert Umbarger, 85, of Lexington passed away Monday, April 28, 2014 in Whetstone Gardens in Columbus, surrounded by his family.

The son of Harold and Florence (Au) Umbarger, Jim was born in Mansfield November 29, 1928. Following his graduation from Mansfield Senior High, Jim attended Bowling Green State University. Jim joined the Air National Guard as a cook. He then graduated from The Ohio State University after majoring in Restaurant Management. While at school he met Susan Humphreys. The two were married on December 17, 1960.

Following graduation, Jim worked for Food Craft Management managing restaurants in Troy, Columbus and the Blue Dolphin in Mansfield. He later opened the first Ponderosa in Mansfield. For the past 13 years Jim served as morning host at Der Dutchman.

Jim served as past president of the Ohio Restaurant Association and the Mid-Central Ohio Restaurant Association. He was a member of the Lexington Kiwanis Club and The Ohio State University Alumni Club. Jim was also a member of the First Congregational Church in Mansfield.

Along with his devoted wife Susan, he is survived by three children, David (Teri) Umbarger of Columbus, Kathy (Bob) Roth and Karen (Mike) Arena all of Powell; grandchildren Lauren, Blake, and Luke Roth, Sydney, Max, Reagan, and Emerson Arena, and Callie and Ella Umbarger; brother Malcolm (Marge) Umbarger of Columbus.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Dr. Edwin Umbarger.

The family will receive friends Thursday, May 1, 2014 from 5-8pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where funeral services will be Friday at 11 am. The Rev. Dr. Ronald Kline will officiate and burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to the Mid-Central Ohio Restaurant Association Scholarship Fund may be made through the funeral home.
