James H. Byrd Sr.

February 18, 1953 ‒ January 12, 2019

Marion, Ohio

James H. Byrd Sr., age 65, of Marion, died peacefully on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at Marion General Hospital following a recent decline in his health.

On February 18, 1953, James was born in Marion, Ohio, the oldest of four children of the late James Roy and Edith “Lucille” (Cray) Byrd. He attended Marion Harding High School.

Shortly following school, Jim was introduced to his bride to be, Betty Jo Stambaugh, by her brother, William “Bill” Stambaugh. The rest was history, and they were married on July 8, 1972. They cherished their forty six years of marriage, and raised two sons together: Jim Jr. and Austin.

Jim was a hard working man, often working until his hands bled, then he would get up the next day and do it all over again. He began his career in concrete at Ishida Concrete, and later was self-employed earning the trust of many around Marion to pour concrete for their construction projects. Jim made even the toughest jobs seem easy. He was especially proud when his sons followed in his footsteps, carrying on his legacy of pouring concrete. He also drove truck for Vigortone.

Never wanting much for himself, Jim donated his time and efforts on many projects for Habitat for Humanity. He also would hold cookouts as a sponsor for Special Olympics, again donating everything for the cause.

Whenever Jim wasn’t pouring concrete, he would high tail it up to his camper at Lake Erie, where he loved boating and fishing. He especially loved being outdoors, deer and mushroom hunting, and getting lost in the woods. He also enjoyed tinkering in his garage, working on cars, and cooking barbeque for his family and friends.

Jim was a simple, straight forward man, who never met a stranger. He was a jokester, who could get you to laugh even on your worst day. Above all else, Jim was a man who deeply loved his family. He loved every minute spent with his wife, sons, grandchildren, brothers and sister, nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Betty Byrd; two sons: James (Teresa) Byrd Jr. and Austin (Stephanie) Byrd; six grandchildren: Robbie Byrd and Dawson Byrd, and Devon, Kaleb, Sharaya, and Kaitlyn Byrd; one great-grandson, Bentley Byrd; two siblings: Debbie (David) Vaughn, and Phillip (Mia) Byrd; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Including his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Marvin Byrd.

His family will greet friends from 2 – 4 pm on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, GUNDER/HALL Chapel, 347 W. Center St., Marion. Services honoring his life will follow there at 4 pm, with Minister Kevin McCoy officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Marion Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home to assist with unexpected expenses.
