James Frank Roberts

J. Frank Roberts III, age 83, of Delaware, died on Monday afternoon, May 19, 2003 at Mount Carmel West Hospital, Columbus.
He was born on March 22, 1920 in Liberty, Mississippi to the late James Frank Jr. and Mary G. (Clark) Roberts. Graduate of Central Columbus High School Class of 1938. He joined the US Navy in 1942, serving as an aviation machinist mate. His unit of one officer and twelve enlisted men maintained the flight instruments on twenty-eight aircraft. After five separate invasions of islands in the Pacific his unit was sent to Iwo Jima and then onto Okinawa where the war ended.
After being discharged from the Navy, he immediately took a job as a welder at Correct Manufacturing Company in Delaware, where he worked for 20 years. He also had worked several years at Whiteside Manufacturing in Delaware. He became interested in vocational education. Under a special training program sponsored by Governor James A. Rhodes he began to teach vocational education. He taught young men and women how to work with both their head and their hands at Terra Technical College in Fremont, where he worked for twenty-two years before transferring to Columbus Community College.
He was a member of the High Point Nazarene Church of Delaware, American Legion Post 115, and past master of Sparrow Lodge #400 F & A.M., Sunbury where he was a member for over 50 years. For many years he worked for the Delaware American Red Cross and served on their disaster team. He worked for the Delaware Boosters Club where he served as president. He and his wife Mildred worked with youth in many organizations over the years and believe that they have served over two thousand boys and girls in organizations such as the cub scouts, brownies, boy scouts, girl scouts, and explorer scouts. In his later years, he had been active in the retired senior citizens organizations and has been instrumental in establishing and providing services to the seniors of Delaware County and Council for Older Adults.
He is survived by a Son; Jim (Toni) Roberts of Columbus, Daughter; Vickie (Howard) Kraus of Delaware, Grandchildren; Teri and Jeff Roberts, Rodney Jr., Rick, Emily, and Ben Herriott, Great-Grandchildren; Chandler and Taryn Roberts, Hannah, Catherine, Andrew, and Sarah Ralston, Seth and Kayla Wade, McKenzie Hill, Samuel and Calob Herriott, Sisters; Mary June McKay of Delaware, and Geneva Fuller of Marengo.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred Iona (Walker) Roberts on December 13, 1987; and a brother, Carl Franks.
Friends may call Thursday 6-8 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 75 W. William St., Delaware, Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m.. Funeral services will be held at the High Point Nazarene Church, 795 Pollock Rd., Delaware on Friday at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Kevin Seymour officiating. Interment will follow in Sunbury Memorial Park.
