James Edward Gates, IV

October 13, 1976 ‒ August 17, 2019

Marion, Ohio

James Edward Gates, IV, known as “Jimmy Ed” to his family and “Smokey” to his friends, passed away surrounded by his family, Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Grant Medical Center after injuries sustained from an automobile accident.  Jimmy was 42 years old and lived in Marion.

Jimmy was born in Marion, Ohio on October 13, 1976 to James Edward “Ed” III and Virginia “Jenny” Lee (Haines) Gates. Jimmy graduated in 1995 from Marion Harding High School.

Growing up, Jimmy enjoyed playing baseball and soccer. He loved spending time fishing with his grandparents, parents, and especially his big brother. Jimmy loved being in the woods deer hunting. He was skilled at field dressing and processing, making sure no part of the deer was wasted. Jimmy had an ongoing competition with his brother-in-law to see who was the best venison chef. He also enjoyed gardening and rejuvenating houseplants in need of rescuing from his sister. Jimmy had a knack for fixing just about anything especially cars and motorcycles; his nephew Ricky always by his side in the garage. Jimmy loved taking his nephew Josh trick or treating, until Josh out grew it. Jimmy loved his nephews and would drop whatever he was doing to help them out.

Jimmy enjoyed times of reflection with his mom, who, through everything, supported him.  Being a man of faith, Jimmy attended Apex Church with his parents.

Jimmy is survived by parents Ed and Jenny, daughter, Samantha (Michael Snyder) Gates of Marion; siblings, Benjamin (Katie) Gates and Jennifer (Deon) Caudill both of Marion, nieces and nephews, Josh Coy (Florida), Ricky Caudill, Brittany (Robbie) Johnson, Cory (Trey) Shea, Brandi (Jake) Keller, Chelsie Caudill and Anthony Nye, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Also surviving Jimmy is best friend, Bernie Stanley and canine companion, Brodie.

Visitation will be held at Snyder Funeral Homes, Gunder/Hall Chapel (347 West Center Street, Marion) on Thursday, August 22, 2019 from 5 until 7 pm.  A funeral celebrating Jimmy’s life will be held 10:30 am Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Grover Caudill officiating.  Burial will follow in Caledonia Cemetery.
