James E. Montgomery, 85, of Galion passed away Monday, September 12, 2016 at Signature HealthCARE in Galion.

Born February 21, 1931 in Bucyrus, he was the son of Walter and Hazel (Probst) Montgomery. He married Nora J. (Rapp) Montgomery on May 25, 1957 and she survives.

James served with the United States Marines during the Korea Conflict and was a truck driver for Kaplan Trucking Company. He was a member of the Crestline VFW Post 2920 and AMVETS Post 87. James especially loved spending time with his family

In addition to his wife, he is survived by children Delbert W. Montgomery of Ava, Missouri, Larry J. Montgomery of Galion, Lester F. (Judy) Montgomery of Galion, David A. Montgomery of Galion, Edward T. (Jan) Montgomery of Suffolk, Virginia and Lori (Scott) Murphy of Galion; ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; brother Kenny (Louise) Somerlot of Owosso, Michigan; sister-in-law Betty Somerlot of Willoughby and brothers-in-law Wilbur Coykendall and Frank Bishop, both of Galion.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by step father Delbert Somerlot who raised him; brother John Somerlot and six sisters, Edna Music, Lucille Bishop, Ruby Coykendall, Juanita Keirns and Mary.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, September 15, 2016 at Richardson Davis Chapel of Snyder Funeral Homes, 218 South Market St., Galion, Ohio 44833 where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 16 with Rev. Pat Fruth officiating. Burial will follow at Iberia Cemetery.

Full military honors will be conducted by the United States Marines and Galion Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail.

Memorial contributions may be made to Signature HealthCARE, Alzheimer unit or Galion Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail in care of the funeral home.

  • We are so sorry to read about the death of Mr. Montgomery, we met him and his wife when our family members were at Village Care a few years ago. I am sorry I won’t be able to come up for the calling hours or for the funeral but will certainly keep you in my thoughts and prayers. That is a wonderful video of memories.

My mom (Audrey) has always spoken of Jimmy as being one of her favorites down through the years, always remembering spending time with him at the Montgomery Reunions. He’s at peace now.
