BELLVILLE: James E. “Jim” Friday, 84, of Bellville, died Saturday morning October 11, 2003 in his home following a long illness.
He was born December 28, 1918 in Butler to F. Bruce and Eva R. McCollough Friday, was graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1936, and was a resident of Richland County most of his life.
A Marine Corps veteran of WWII, Jim served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, and participated in action at Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, and the occupation of China.
He was a life member of Irvin Hiskey Post #535 American Legion, Bellville. As Past Post Commander, Jim served the post through officer chairs for numerous years. He also served as Commander of the Post’s Burial Detail.
Jim was Past 5th District Commander of the Ohio American Legion, also serving through the officer’s chairs.
He was a member of William O. Naylor Post #43 AMVETS, Bellville, Robert L. Castor Post #5101 V.F.W., Lexington, 40 et 8 in Mansfield, which he had served as Chef de Gare, and was a member of the United States Marine Corps League.
Jim was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bellville, where he served the congregation as a Lay Reader, Sunday school teacher, choir member, and church council member. He was also a retired Lieutenant in the Ohio Highway Patrol Auxiliary, Mansfield Post 70.
He had worked over 40 years with Culligan Soft Water Service, retiring as Mansfield Plant Manager.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Donna Lee and Patrick Ferrante of Ormond Beach, Florida; his son and daughter-in-law Stephen A. and Jamie Friday of Dublin; four grandchildren Cindy Ferrante of Surprise, Arizona, Erica Friday and Gregory Friday both of Findlay, and Shelby Friday of Dublin; his sister Mary E. Friday Pace of Mansfield; and two nieces and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his wife Arlynn A. Calkins Friday on November 6, 1988; a son Robert B. Friday; a granddaughter Dawn Schulte; and a brother Albert D. Friday.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 14, 2003 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, where the funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 am. The Rev. Douglas J. Pretorius will officiate. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery, where American Legion Post #535 will hold graveside military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions to Hospice of North Central Ohio may be made at the funeral home.
