Jacob W. “Jake” Richardson

August 29, 2001 ‒ January 24, 2018

Delaware, Ohio

Jacob Wade “Jake” Richardson, age 16 of Delaware died Wednesday, January 24, 2018 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on SR 257 South.

A sophomore member of the 2020 Class of Buckeye Valley High School, he was born on August 29, 2001 in Westerville to loving parents Jeremy and Jennifer “Jenny” (Smith) Richardson.  One blessed with many friends, he was a friend to all due to his outgoing personality.

At Buckeye Valley he was a member of Spanish Club, A Team, and enjoyed hanging out with his buddies.  Growing up he participated in flag football and Little League Baseball with his community friends.  Smart and described as a “computer kid” he was an outdoorsman at heart. He enjoyed exploring nature. His favorite place was at any beach.

Jake earned his black belt in taekwondo, and looked forward to learning how to fly, with his father as his teacher.  His fun loving personality earned him the nick name of “Joken Jake”. Sensitive and sweet, he was quick witted and always quick with unique one liners in dialogue. He will be remembered for his calm and gentle nature, but most of all for his love of family and being a friend to all.

In addition to his parents he is also survived by his sister Alexa who he called “Gibby”, grandparents: Linda and Ray Richardson of Lexington, Steve and Linda Smith, Nancy Smith of Tiffin, great-grandmother Eula Richardson of Sandusky, Aunts Danielle Smith, Kara and Dustin Kraus, Great-Aunt and Uncle Sharon and Barry Jerman, nieces and nephews: Hayden Smith, Morgan Smith, Ava and Alex Kraus as well as a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his idol and great grandfather Warren Wade Smith.

Friends may call Sunday from 2:30 – 5:00 at the Grace Church of Powell, 7600 Liberty Rd N., Powell, Ohio 43065 where services will follow at 5:30 p.m.  with Pastor Rick Nuzum officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center in Delaware.

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Jacob to the Columbus Zoo, P.O. Box 400, Powell, Ohio 43065.

  • Dear Richardson family,

This is Max Stokeys mom, Tiya. You are all on my mind and in my prayers every minute. Max is devastated and loved your son like a brother. He has said to me, ‘if Jake played basketball, we would be the same person. Sometimes we laugh that maybe we are twins’. The first thing Max said Wednesday night when he could speak again is, ‘i need to visit Jake’s parents’. Hopefully, I can bring him over some day soon.

My favorite memory of Jake is every day in the summer, he would go back and forth in front of our house on his skateboard gazing over every once and awhile looking for Max. Jake wouldn’t let up until Max appeared. I would yell to Max, ‘jake’s sending smoke signals. You better hurry up and get out there!’ One time I spyed on the boys, because I wanted to make sure they weren’t getting into trouble. I found them sitting under a tree talking about all the foods they love and hate. I just laughed.

Please just know how much people loved Jake. Max will always have an emptiness because of this loss, but Max is a much better person for having had him in his life.

Our deepest sympathy. Love and prayers always,

    The Stokey Family

  • Dear Richardson Family,
We are heart broken for your loss. Mitch had Jake in quite a few of his classes last year. When talking to us about Jake, He got a big smile on his face and said we had so much fun in Ms Flynn’s class, Jake was so funny. You should be proud of the boy you raised. Our Family continues to pray for you.
    Our Deapest Sympathy,
    The Schneider Family

  • We are so sorry for your loss. Jake was a sweet, wonderful person and I still vividly remember those summer nights watching our boys play baseball and have such a great time together. You all are in our thoughts and hearts.

    The Brown family

  • I would like to extend my condolences to your family, I am so sorry for this tragic loss. It is obvious that Jake lived a life filled with love and he will be remembered by those close to him, and by “The God of all comfort”. May you yourselves take comfort in the Bible’s promise at Revelations 21:4 that there will come a day when, God “will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will suffering not pain nor outcry be anymore”. When that time comes, sad occasions such as these will be a thing of the past and we will rejoice with our loved ones again.

  • Praying for strength and comfort to you in this time of terrible loss. Jake will be missed by all…

  • Love and prayers for all of you. I’m so sorry for your loss, words cannot express. I never got to meet Jacob, but I know he and Alexa are the light in thier Grandma Linda’s eye and I’ve heard many wonderful things about them. My heart and prayers are with you all.

    With deepest Sympathy,

  • Jake was in my music class at BVMS. He was always pleasant and respectful, and quiet yet funny. He was a wonderful person, and I’m honored to have known him. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers.

  • Dear Richardson Family,

May your memories of Jake and the love of your family surround you and give you strength and peace in the days ahead. We are so sad for you and we will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers.

    Bobbi McCarthy’s Family

  • Jake was a pleasure to have as a student in my English class. He was always kind and sweet but also witty and funny — often when we least expected it. He was also a student that I could always depend on helping another classmate or myself. A friend to many at BVHS, he will be missed.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  • To all of the Richardson family. My family shares your sorrow and grief. I will forever remember Jake’s smile and all of our special times that we did together with your family at the farm for Halloween and hay rides. We all rejoice as he is now in the arms of the Lord. I pray that you receive peace and your pain lessens. Nothing compares to loosing a child, but we must know that Jake is doing well, is pain free and wants your family to have faith that you will be together again. Patsy and Larry probably have greeted him now. Love you guys.

  • Richardson family, my sincerest heart felt sympathy during this tragic loss. Words can not convey our deepest sorrow for the loss of your beloved son. My you find peace and love through God’s guidance.

  • Your family never met us but we know of you and your love for one of our family members , Erika. She shared with us what happened and we have not ceased to pray for you all. Our condolences are with you and we will continue to pray for you in the days ahead. Psalm 91.

  • I did not know Jacob. I do not know your family. I am so heartbroken for your family that I just had to tell you how sorry I am. Jacob obviously was a very sweet young man. What a loss this world has suffered. My heart cries for you. Godspeed Jacob, God Bless Jacob’s family.

  • Dear Richardson Family,

Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time. Our daughter is a classmate of Jake’s and will miss his great humor and fun personality.
May you find peace in knowing he was so well liked.

  • Jay, Jenny & Lexi,
Words can’t express how saddened we are for your loss. We will cherish our memories of Jake who was like a son to us and a brother to the kids. I don’t think there has been a day in the past year the boys were either over at your house or Jake was at our house.
We will always remember Jake’s smile and his laughter. Cory would always say something to Jake to make him laugh and Jake always had a quick response to make us all laugh!
We are all going to be lost without Jake but know we will always be a few footsteps from your front door when you need us.
    Love you all!
Cory, Shari, Stone, AJ & Jersee Foltz

  • I do not know your family but felt I need to send condolences because my heart ached when I read about this tragedy. I have grandchildren around this age and know you are devastated. May our glorious God give you strength and love to get through this situation.

  • Dear Jay, Jenny, & Lexi,
It’s no mistake that God brought us together as family this past year. Words cannot describe how grateful I am to you for helping me when I was in need. I feel so privileged to love each of you and my memories of Wade are secured in my heart forever. One of my favorite things about Jake was his protective, genuine, and devoted love toward Lex. When the two of them would “dumb around” (as Jenny would jokingly say), it was a beautiful picture of a true bond. That bond was evidently modeled by the dynamic duo: the superman “glue guy” and the warm & fuzzy dental hygienist. 💜
I know Lexi lost a brother, and that will never be replaced, but I will do my best to make sure she knows she has a big sister in me. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of Jake’s life because I sincerely felt he was my little brother. The older I get, the more I am learning that the only way we walk through extreme grief is God’s Unending Love, Amazing Grace.
2 Corinthians 12:9 “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
    I love you always,

  • My condolences go to the Richardson family and friends. My heart breaks knowing someone so close in age can loss their life this way. Something that helps me deal with the loss of a loved one is knowing what the future holds. Revelation 21:4 talks about death, pain and suffering being something of the past. Knowing that there will be a time when I will no longer lose my loved ones, I will no longer get sick or deal with death brings me comfort. This is a promise God has for our future and I hope thru prayer and thru the bible your family and friends will be able to find comfort and endurance needed to get thru this.

  • Richard family. You are in our thoughts and prayers during this time. God is your strength and power. So sorry to hear about your lose. I am the sister of Tom and Nikki Menning.
Gods blessing Bob Cheryl Nick and Angela Miller

Will pass this on to Rob as I know he will send his love and sympathy.
Know that you are all in our prayers.
