July 19, 1928 ‒ October 28, 2013
MANSFIELD: Ivan Stevens’ work ethic helped to mold his character. Remaining humble, Ivan understood that his successes in life was not given but earned. A man who worked hard and appreciated the small things in life, Ivan Stevens passed away Monday evening, October 28, 2013 in his daughter’s home with his caring and devoted family at his side. He was 85.
The son of James and Hazel (Robinson) Stevens, Ivan was born in Mansfield on July 19, 1928.
Working most of his life, at 11 years old Ivan earned extra money by mowing lawns in the summer months. Placing his family before himself, he worked full time, driving a milk truck as a teenager.
While working at a gas station in Mansfield, Ivan noticed a cute young lady, Ruth McKinney, driving a sharp looking convertible. True to his nature, Ivan worked hard at courting Ruth. Four months later, on July 28, 1958, the two were married in the First Church of God, in Mansfield.
As a young man Ivan was employed at Westinghouse in the vending department and later worked at the Phillips 66 gas station in Mansfield. He then retired from Gorman Rupp Industries.
Ivan respected and enjoyed nature. Every year he tended to his vegetable garden and loved planting fruit trees such as apple, cherry, and pear trees. He also planted a pecan tree.
A jack of all trades kind of guy, Ivan was a self taught carpenter. As a young man he remodeled houses with his brother. Ivan also enjoyed working on cars.
A loving father and husband, Ivan leaves a legacy of dedication, commitment and a strong work ethic.
He is survived by his daughter Laurie Stevens of Mansfield; cherished nieces Deborah Sparks of Jacksonville, FL and Gale Sheridan of Bellville; and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews and extended family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Stevens; brothers George and Eugene Stevens; sister Betty Kirly.
Friends may call Friday, November 1, 2013 from 5-6 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where the memorial service will be held at 6 pm. Celebrant Jerry Wilson will officiate.
