MANSFIELD: Howard W. Dawson, age 95, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 6, 2014 in Hospice House of Ashland following a brief illness.

Howard was born August 4, 1919 in Morrow County to Berlin & Pearl (Wilson) Dawson and was a Mansfield area resident since 1939.

On February 9, 1941 he married Ruth Iris Geyer and together they shared 46 wonderful years until she passed away in 1987. They are now together again.

He proudly served his country as a member of the US Army Air Force and during WWII he was a Corporal with the 3rd Division. After the war, he was employed as a dispatcher for the Commercial Lovelace Motor Freight where he worked for over 41 years and from where he retired in 1980. Even in retirement, he kept busy by working at Jay Plastics until he was 87 years old.

Howard was a longtime active member of the Mayflower Congregational Church where he served as head usher and was involved with many church committees. He was a 49 year member of AA.

In free time, he thoroughly enjoyed the relaxation of fishing and the excitement of traveling.

Howard is survived by a son and daughter-in-law George & Linda Dawson of Mansfield; two daughters and sons-in-law Judy & Ray Peterson of Mansfield, and Kathy & Russ Spidel of Byron, GA; five grandchildren and spouses Ed & Robin Peterson, Rob & Heather Peterson, Jeff & Kristen Spidel, Tim Spidel, and Laura Dawson Ramirez; seven great-grandchildren Tori Spidel, Morgan Peterson, Blake Peterson, Cory Peterson, Desiree Peterson, Alexis Wilkinson Ramirez, and Austyn Ramirez; a sister Margaret Perkins of Chesterville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his loving wife, Ruth Dawson, he was preceded in death by his parents; a brother James Dawson; and a sister Eileen Follin.

The family will receive friends 2-5 p.m. Sunday, November 9, 2014 in the Finefrock Chapel of Snyder Funeral Home, 350 Marion Ave in Mansfield. A funeral service honoring his life will be held there 10:30 a.m. Monday with The Rev. Dr. Gary Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park with the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail performing military honors.

Contributions in his memory to the Mayflower Congregational Church may be made at the funeral home.
