Howard Mills, age 90, of Mount Vernon died Monday September 19, 2011 at the residence of his lifelong friend Anna Kinnard. Howard was born February 7, 1921 in Warsaw, Ohio to Joseph and Ezzie (Sheppard) Mills.
Howard served with the United States Army Air Corps during World War Two flying 40 night missions in A20 and A26 bombers in Italy. He continued his service in the United States Air Force for 23 years and flew 88 missions in Douglas-C47 Skytrain aircraft in the Berlin Air Lift. Howard was a member of the Air Forces first flight demonstration team flying B25’s at air shows. This team was the precursor to the Air Force “Thunderbirds”. Following his Air Force service Howard worked 18 years for NASA in Houston helping to put a man on the moon.
Surviving are his sons Philip Mills of San Antonio, Texas and Frederick Mills of Clear Lake City, Texas; 2 grandchildren Heather Mills and Audrey Mills; 3 great grandchildren Cyrus, Sean and Colby; brothers Harold Mills of Ney Ohio and Paul Mills of Phoenix, Arizona; his sister Luella Stockdale of Bennington Glen Nursing Home in Marengo; and his close friend Anna Kinnard of Mount Vernon. Besides his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his wife Prudence Jane Shipley Mills, his brothers Harvey Mills and Denver Mills and his sister Wilma Saunders.
Inurnment with full military honors will be held on Friday, September 30, 2011 beginning at 12 PM in Houston National Cemetery (10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038).
Since Howard was an animal lover, memorial contributions may be made to the Knox County Cat Shelter, 400 Columbus Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050.
