Herman W. Fischer, 87, of Galion, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009 at Galion Community Hospital after a five month illness.

Born Mar. 20, 1921 in Mt. Carmel, Ill., he was the son of the late Charles G. Fischer and Inez Nelson Fischer. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jeanne E. Windes Fischer, whom he married on Apr. 12, 1942.

Herman was a 1939 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School in Mt. Carmel, Ill. and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He was a charter member of Grace Brethren Church, Galion, where he taught Sunday school for 45 years, served as an elder and was Pastor of Visitation. He was a machinist at Galion Iron Works and later worked in production control before retiring in 1984.

Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Melanie Kay and Larry Wipert of Galion; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey K. and Jennifer Fischer of Xenia; seven grandchildren, Eric Fischer, Ryan Fischer, Joshua Cousins, Megan Cousins, Jenny Cline, Amy Alberty and Cathy Yetter; five great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Helen Clevenger of Galion and Irma Bill Ballard and Mary Jane Fischer of Mt. Carmel, Ill. and one brother-in-law, Wendyl Fisher of Peoria, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by one son, W. Michael Fischer; two sisters and five brothers.

Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, with Pastor Jeff Pennington and Dr. Russell Simpson officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery where military graveside services will be conducted by the United States Navy.
