Herman L. “John” Sargent, 82, of 330 First Ave., Galion, died Tuesday, Apr. 17, 2007 at home.

Born Nov. 2, 1924 in Tazewell Co., Va., he was the son of the late William B. Sargent and Grace E. Vernon Sargent. He married Helen D. Smith Vance Sargent on July 26, 1954 and she survives.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Galion. He and his wife were long time foster parents and were home to 42 children. He is a member of Galion Lodge 414 Free and Accepted Masons; a 32nd Degree Member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus; Aladdin Temple Shrine, Columbus; Galion Shrine Club and American Legion Scarbrough Post 243, Galion.

He is a World War II veteran and served in the 15th Air Force in a heavy bomber group in Italy. He retired from the former Perfection-Cobey Company in Galion after 29 years where he was a machinist.

He is survived by one son, Mark L. Sargent of Mansfield; two sisters, Essie F. Vrooman of Marion and Eloise Sargent of Bandy, Va. and one brother and sister-in-law, Ernest and Lola Sargent of Cedar Bluff, Va.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Thursday, Apr. 19, 2007 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 20, with Rev. Timothy Wingert officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Galion/Crestline area veteranÂ’s organizations and the U.S. Air Force.

Masonic Services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday during calling hours at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home.
