Herbert E. “Herb” Walton

December 09, 1929 ‒ October 25, 2006

Johnsville, Ohio

JOHNSVILLE: Herbert E. “Herb” Walton, 76, of Township Road 83, died Wednesday afternoon October 25, 2006 at his home following a wood cutting accident.

He was born December 9, 1929 in Ashland County to Leonard M. and Maybelle Pearl (Sayers) Walton.

Herb served with the U.S. Army in Korea, and was honorably discharged November 14, 1952 as a corporal.

A member of Teamsters Union Local #40, Herb drove for Empire Detroit Steel in Mansfield.

Following a dream, in 1977 he moved from Ashland to Montana and built a log cabin at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. In Big Sky Country he worked as a cowboy and ranch hand. He served as a volunteer fireman with the Nye (MT) Volunteer Fire Department.

An avid hunter of elk and deer, Herb enjoyed being outdoor and working with horses. He whiled away many hours cutting wood and building Conestoga wagons…wagons that he used in long distance wagon trains.

He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie # 2178 Ashland, and attended The Pines Christian Church, Johnsville.

Described as one not easily forgotten, Herb loved life, and had a sense of humor and carefree, fun loving personality that was infectious. Honest and generous to a fault, he never knew a stranger and could be talked in to a game of pinochle at the drop of a hat.

He is survived by his wife H. Joretta Morrison Looney Walton, whom he married December 18, 1996; a son and daughter-in-law Kim and Esther Walton of Mansfield; a daughter Vienna Walton of Mansfield; five grandchildren Eric and Jessica Walton of Perrysville; Cody Walton and Travis Walton both of Ashland, BJ and Michael Shambaugh and Ben and April Hamilton all of Mansfield; five great grandchildren; step children Bill and Sherry Bright and Lee and Jody Bright all of Ashland and Sandi Bright of Wooster; eight step grandchildren and 18 step great grandchildren; five sisters and three brothers Judy Bodley of Grants, NM, Barbara Perry of Mansfield, Dixie Roth of Salome, AZ, Ella Shannon of Perryville, Vedora Thompson of Mansfield, Bob Walton of Taveras, FL, Dick Walton of Cottonwood, AZ, and Leonard Walton, Jr. of Ashland.

He was preceded in death by his second wife Edna Marie Walton; an infant daughter Lisa Mae; and a stepson Steven Bright.

The family will receive friends Sunday, October 29, 2006 from 3-6 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where the funeral service will be held Monday at 11 am. Pastor Roy Hostetler will officiate. Burial will follow in Shauck Cemetery, where the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will hold graveside military honors.
