Herbert Allen DeWeese, Jr.
November 19, 1948 ‒ September 04, 2013
MANSFIELD: Herbert Allen DeWeese, Jr. passed away early Wednesday morning, September 4, 2013 in his Mansfield home surrounded by family. He was 64.
Born November 19, 1948 in Mansfield he was the son of Herbert DeWeese, Sr. and Adelaide (Reardon) LeMaster. He was graduated from St. Peter’s High School where he was a great basketball player. He still holds basketball records at St. Pete’s and according to the OHSAA he is among the all-time, top 10 Ohio high school players for most rebounds in a single game (1966) and for total career rebounds.
Herbie was an Ohio State fanatic. His birthday always fell near the OSU v Mich game for which he threw a terrific party, and he will be remembered for his “Dancing Brutus” tradition (he would activate his special mascot figure for each touchdown OSU scored—but it was not to be otherwise touched).
Although Herb enjoyed fishing, sports, and television, his true passion was being a grandfather. His grandkids were his pride and joy and he cheered them on through everything. His friends and family will remember Herb for his generous spirit and huge heart.
He is survived by Marlene DeWeese, whom he married September 1, 1969; three children: Shannon (Tony) Malec, Ami (Rob) Hiles, and Brent DeWeese all of Mansfield; four grandchildren: Cory Malec, Carli Malec, Kera Hiles, and Kayleigh DeWeese; and a sister Cheryl LeMaster of Mansfield.
