Henry R. Deel

December 16, 1903 ‒ May 14, 2007

Marengo, Ohio

Henry R. Deel, age 103, formerly of State Route 61 N, Marengo, Ohio, on Monday, May 14, 2007, at the Bennington Glen Nursing Center.

He was born in Greenbriar, Virginia, on December 16, 1903, the son of the late Emory and Polly Owens Deel.

On February 16, 1927 in Breaks, Virginia, Henry married his loving wife Opal “Gladys” (Owens) Deel, who preceded him in death on June 10, 2001. After over 74 years together on this earth they are together again for eternity

Henry worked in the electrical shop of the Harmon Coal Mines in Harmon, Virginia and for Cadillac Motors in Detroit, Michigan before moving to Cardington in 1943, and then Marengo in 1947. There he farmed, worked at the Cardington Machine Shop, and on the railroad. He also worked for Fairfield Engineering in Marion.

His schooling at the Coyne Electrical School in Chicago and the DeVry Institute in Kansas City led him to his employment with H.P.M. where he worked as an electrician until his retirement in 1969.

Henry remained true to the Old Regular Baptist Faith all his life.

He was a woodworker at heart and had started his own shop before retirement. He made beautiful candlesticks, bowls, and small shelf clocks. He was most proud of his hand built custom grandfather clocks. They are enjoyed and admired in homes from Ohio to Virginia to Texas.

He had the ability to just look at an object and reproduce it in wood. He made all his own jigs and fixtures and many specialty tools for his shop.

Henry will be missed by his five sons & daughters-in-law: Kenneth & Ruth Deel, Ted & Sue Deel, Daniel & Mary Deel, David & Loretta Deel, all of Marengo, and Omar & Norma Deel of Westerville; 20 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Garland, Toby, and Charlie Deel; and four sisters: Edna Mullins, Lina Anderson, Margaret Sloan, and Bess Belcher.

Dad will be missed by the family just as Mom is. The house is empty now, but our love and memories will never die.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday May 17, 2007 at 12:00 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 South Main Street, Mount Gilead, with Henry’s grandson Pastor Keith Deel officiating. Burial will follow in Fulton Cemetery. Friends may call on the family from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
