Henry A. Mess
August 01, 1922 ‒ February 09, 2009
Henry A. Mess, age 86, of Fredericktown, died Monday afternoon, February 9, 2009 at the Stein Hospice Care Center in Sandusky.
He was born in Crookston Minnesota on August 1, 1922, the son of the late Henry and Elvina (Bowser) Mess. At the start of the Great Depression, Henry’s father sold the Minnesota farm and the family moved to Morrow County, purchasing 120 acres in Congress Township. Henry lived the rest of his life on that land.
A United States Army World War II veteran, Henry served as a field gunner in the Battery “B”, 84th Field Artillery Battalion. He graduated the Army Parachute School and saw action in: Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland. He earned the EAME Theatre Ribbon with 6 Bronze Stars and also received the American Theatre Ribbon, American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Ribbon, and a Purple Heart.
Henry held many jobs over the years and retired at the age of 60 from the Tecumseh Corporation in Marion.
His memberships included the American Legion, V.F.W., and he was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.
Henry relished in spending free time on his property target shooting and reloading, being very well respected in these skills. His target range included targets from 25 yards all the way up to 750 yards.
Henry was able to meld his talents as a “human encyclopedia” with an enthusiasm for conversation into an individual with a unique ability to showcase his vast knowledge of military and world history.
Cantankerous in nature, his day was not complete without a few good spirited “discussions” amongst friends and family.
Henry will be missed by his nephew, Larry (Linda) Staup of Fredericktown, and two great nieces: Angela (David) Goldbach and their daughter Megan of Galion, and Sheryl (Mike) Claus of Crestline.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ernie Mess, and his sister, Grace Staup.
Friends may greet the family from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2009, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mt. Gilead, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday with Pastor Dwight Stryker officiating. Burial will follow in Bryn Zion Cemetery with military honors provided by the V.F.W.
