Helga H. Strider

October 12, 1928 ‒ March 02, 2020

Sunbury, Ohio
Formerly of Galena, Ohio

Helga Hedwig “Oma” Strider, age 91 of Westerville, OH, went home to be with her Lord and Savior the evening of Monday, March 2nd. She was born on October 12, 1928, in Herrstein, Germany and was the daughter of Viktor and Erna Schmitz.

In her youth, her family lived in Idar-Oberstein, near Frankfurt, where she liked to play futbol (soccer), ice skating, dancing and spend time with her family and friends. Helga met her future husband while attending a birthday party for one of those friends. She moved to the United States early in 1958, was married on September 13, 1958, and the couple moved to Galena, OH, to start their family.

Helga worked as a Sales Associate for several companies until she was 83 and is especially remembered for her friendliness and kindness to others. She worked at Lazarus (Macy’s) for 22 years and received multiple awards for her dedication to her job. She also worked for Hallmark for 6 years and then Anthony Thomas Candy for 15 years until she retired to spend time with family. She was a member of the Galena Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and was also a member of the District #13 Zoar Rebekah Lodge #887.

Helga enjoyed collecting Beanie Babies and Precious Moments figurines, tending to her flowers and plants, and baking. She made wonderful cookies and the best German Chocolate Cake in the world. She loved music, singing, and listening to the radio, and was instrumental in her daughters’ love of music. Most of all, Helga enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren who brought her endless joy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh J. Strider, her brother Walter and her 3 sisters, Irma, Betty and Lily. Left to cherish Helga’s memory are her daughter’s Christine (Scott) Craig of Sunbury, OH and JoAn (Tony) Migliozzi of Union, KY. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Zach (Megan) Migliozzi, Sammi (Kurtis) Mueller, Kyle (Andrea) Craig and Joel (Sydney) Craig, along with many friends.

Helga’s family will receive friends on Friday, March 6, 2020 from 11:00am-1:00pm at the DeVore Snyder Funeral Home at 637 N. SR 61, Sunbury, OH. A funeral service will immediately follow at 1:00pm at the funeral home with her burial at the Galena Cemetery.

  • I deliver Meals-on-Wheels, and Helga has been one of my clients for many years. The last two time I delivered to her senior apartment complex, she wasn’t on the list. I went to ask about her yesterday, but the desk was busy, and I found this. My heart sank. She was one of the most loving, kind, gentle, etc., etc. human beings I’ve been blessed to meet. My deepest sympathy.

  • Thank you, Cindy, for your kind & sweet words…God bless you in your service.
