MANSFIELD- To say Helen Sass enjoyed bowling would be an understatement. Bowling into her 80’s and sometimes 3-5 times per week, Helen was a champion bowler. Bowling in Long Beach, California and Las Vegas, she was most proud of her invitation to bowl in California’s Pro Bowlers League.
Helen U. Sass, 93, of Mansfield passed away Sunday May 27, 2012 in Mansfield MedCentral Hospital.
Born March 24, 1919 in Akron she was the daughter of Louis Arthur and Eldora V. (Leib) Budd and graduated from Mt. Gilead High School in 1937.
Just two years later Helen moved to Mansfield where she worked at Westinghouse. In 1961 she moved to Long Beach, California and married Fred Sass just four years later. Helen and Fred retired to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1981 where Helen lived for 28 years before moving back to Mansfield in 2010 to be with her family. While living in Las Vegas Helen was a member of University United Methodist Church.
She loved crafts and enjoyed making quilts, sewing and crocheting. Helen loved her grandchildren so much and in 2011 was very happy to share her birthday with her most recent great great-grandchild.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Marilyn and Joe Miller of Mansfield; son and daughter-in-law Robert and Lana Taylor of Reston, Virginia; grandchildren Susan Miller Shire and her husband Tobby, Pam Taylor Mohn and her husband Lee, Steve and Angie Taylor and Shanon Taylor; great grandchildren April Miller Coffman and her husband Gary, Danica Taylor Wallace, Arron, Dylan, and Hannah Taylor; great great-grandchildren James, Emily, and Abigail Coffman; sister-in-law Mary Budd of Las Vegas; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Fred Sass, sister Myrna Cuthbert, brothers Alvin and Cecil Budd and an infant brother Kenneth Budd.
The family will receive friends Friday June 1, 2012 from 2-3pm in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where funeral services will begin at 3pm. Burial will be Wednesday June 6, 2012 at 3pm in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress, California.
Memorial contributions to the American Heart Association or University United Methodist Church of Las Vegas may be made through the funeral home.
