Helen L. Wagner, age 89, of Mount Vernon, died Wednesday December 19, 2007 at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. Helen was born December 8, 1918 in Mount Vernon to Wilbur “Dick” Mills and Louise (Burgess) Mills and had spent most of her lifetime in the Mount Vernon area. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School with academic honors and on June 26, 1938 she married the love of her life Walter R. Wagner. They spent 64 years together until his death in December of 2002. Helen had been employed at Rudin’s Department Store in Mount Vernon, Anne Lapp’s Millinery in Mount Vernon and then in the medical records department of the former Martin Memorial Hospital in Mount Vernon.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon and had attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Mount Vernon. Helen loved music and played the organ at Beulah Methodist Church, Brandon Baptist Church, and First Baptist Church all in the Mount Vernon area and the Southern Pines Baptist Church in Frost Proof, Florida where she and Walter spend their winters. She was a member of the Knox County Organ Club, the Dogwood Blossoms Chapter of Sweet Adeline’s and was a member of Gideon’s International Auxiliary.
Surviving are her sons David (Glenna) Wagner of Mount Vernon and Ronald (Sheila) Wagner of Chillicothe; her daughter Beverly (Charles) Klinkert of Bucyrus; eight grandchildren Steve Wagner, Susan Wagner, Lisa Wagner, Jill Smith, Ann Hemm, Julia Meyer, Kevin Wagner and Chris Wagner and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Walter and her sister Mildred Maslowski.
Funeral services will be Friday at 2 PM at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon with Rev. Mikel Norris officiating. Burial will follow at Mound View Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 12 Noon until the time of the funeral at 2 PM.
