Hazel I. Scheurman
September 27, 1915 ‒ July 10, 2004
BUTLER: Hazel Iona Scheurman, 88, of Main Street, Butler, died Saturday evening July 10, 2004 in her home, following a long illness.
Surrounded by her loving family, Hazel went to be with her God and Savior Jesus Christ.
She was born September 27, 1915 in Knox County to John L. and Mary Ellen (Meeks) Strouse, and was graduated from Danville High School in 1934.
On May 17, 1937 she married William Paul Scheurman, and they moved from Knox County to Butler in 1947.
In the 1950’s and 60’s, Hazel worked in the Butler Variety Store, in 1969-70 at Zed’s Restaurant, and through the 1970’s she maintained the church building of Mount Sinai United Methodist Church as its custodian. She retired in 1980 from Gorman Rupp, and participated in activities with the Gorman Rupp Retirees Club.
Though Hazel always held a job outside the home, she considered homemaker her highest honor, and counted it a privilege to donate countless pies for Butler’s Old Fashioned Days festival.
She was a member of Mount Sinai United Methodist Church, where she dearly loved teaching the Sunday school 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders, and continued her ministry to her neighborhood children.
Hazel was the consummate hostess: generous to family and friends alike. No one ate in front of the television at Hazel’s home! Guests were treated as royalty.
An avid quilter, her heart proved more nimble than her fingers in piecing together the fabric of loving bonds as a mother and friend.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Donna and David Ufferman of Centerburg; a sister and brother-in-law Vivian and Junior Vincent of Evart, Michigan; brother-in-law James Hull of Champaign, Illinois and sister-in-law Joanna Bloom of Port Washington; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Paul on August 18, 1969; an adolescent sister Virginia Strouse; a sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth and Robert Overmyer; a brother and sister-in-law Lewis and Janice Strouse; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Hubert and Sally Scheurman, Kenneth Scheurman, Mary Bashford; Doris Hull and Irving Bloom.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 13, 2004, from 4-8 pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, where the funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at 11 am. The Rev. Kenneth Kinley will officiate. Burial will follow in Zion Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to Mount Sinai United Methodist Church, or Hospice of North Central Ohio may be made at the funeral home.
