Harry E. Turner Sr. age 76, of Mount Vernon died Tuesday July 27, 2004 at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. Harry was born December 25, 1927 in Mount Vernon to Paul H. and Harriett E. (Krafft) Turner and had spent his lifetime in Mount Vernon. Harry graduated from Mount Vernon High School. He attended Ohio State University in Columbus where he was a cheerleader. Harry served with the U S Navy from 1946 to 1947 on board the USS Massey DD778. He graduated from Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio in 1951 where he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and earned his Jurist Doctorate Degree from Ohio Northern University in 1954 where he was a member of Sigma Delta Kappa fraternity. He was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1954, began law practice in Mount Vernon that same year and still maintained his practice to this day. Harry was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and the U S District Court for Ohio in 1966.

He served as Mount Vernon Municipal Court Prosecutor 1955-1958 and City Solicitor 1958-1962. He served on the Mount Vernon Board of Education from 1964 to 1970, was president of the board for 5 years. During his tenure on the board of education the Mount Vernon High School was built in 1969 and 1970. Harry was also a trustee for the Ohio School Boards Associations 1968-1970. He served on the board of the former Hannah Browning Home in Mount Vernon from 1987 to 2001; Station Break/Commission on Planning Services 1989 to 1995 and was a member of the Knox County Public Defenders Commission from 1987-1991. Harry served in the Ohio General Assembly as the representative for the 76th District in Ohio from 1973-1985. He was a member of the Ohio Bar Association, which honored him for 50 years in the practice of law in 2004. He was also a member of the Knox County Bar Association. Harry was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon where he had served on the church council.

Surviving are his wife Shirley M. (Eggert) Turner whom he married July 8, 1950; his son Harry E. (Lisa) Turner Jr. of Mount Vernon; 5 grandchildren Josh Turner, Leila Turner, Jacob Turner, Hallie Turner and Rachael Turner; and two sisters Joyce (Donald) Morrison of Mount Vernon and Betty (Larry) Hard of Westerville. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his son Thomas F. Turner.

Friends may call at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon on Thursday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 PM. A memorial service honoring the life of Harry E. Turner Sr. will be Saturday at 4 PM at Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon with Rev. Mark Wildermuth officiating. Private burial will be in Mound View Cemetery.
