Harold W. “Sam” McCarty, age 60 of Sunbury died unexpectedly following heart surgery, early Sunday morning, September 9, 2007 at Riverside Methodist Hospital.
A lifelong resident of the Kilbourne and Sunbury area he was born on September 15, 1946 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia to the late George and Beulah (Mayes) McCarty. For the past 30 years he worked as a millwright for National Lime and Stone, a master of welding and maintenance engineering. He and his wife also operated the McCarty’s Market and Bait Shop in Kilbourne since 1999.
An avid fisherman, he enjoyed fishing the waters of Alum Creek and raising a large vegetable garden, for which he was known for his pumpkin patch. He was a fan of all sports; baseball, basketball, football, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. He also took great pride in raising his rooster’s and collection of knifes. A hard dedicated worker, Sam was a wonderful provider who longed for more time with his family. Kind and generous, he was a loving husband, father, and friend.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years: Eva (Wigton), Children: Wayne (Tammy) McCarty of Delaware, Cindy Nesser of Delaware, Shawn (Veronica) McCarty of Phoenix, AZ, Jessica (Andy) Thompson of Delaware, Marla (Jeff) Barnhart of Marengo, 24 Grandchildren: Travis, Tyler, Wayne II, Dalton, Jake, Jessica, Dustin, Steven, Mallory, Taylor, Daniel, Samantha, Brandon, Jimmy, Dillon, Sam, Riley, Drew, Jed, Shelia, Kisha (Dan), Jason, Courtney, Brittany, Great-granddaughter Lily Rae, Brothers: George (Frida) McCarty of Hurricane, WV, Kenny (Sharon) McCarty of Delaware, Sisters: Maxine (Glen) Gibson of Henderson, WV, Bonnie (Gray) Mason of Milton, WV, Mother-in-law: Ethel Yontz of Delaware.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by daughter Norma Wendel, Brothers: Richard and Roy McCarty, and Sister Marylou Parsons.
Friends may call Wednesday 5-8 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR 3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will be held Thursday 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Sonja Bender officiating, burial will follow in the Green mound Cemetery in Kilbourne.
