Harold L. “Murph” Mahaffey
February 26, 1930 ‒ December 18, 2007
Harold L. “Murph” Mahaffey, age 77, of Marion, died on early Tuesday morning, December 18, 2007, at the Marion General Hospital following a long illness.
On February 26, 1930, Harold was born in Marion County, the son of the late George and Gertrude Beaver Mahaffey. A graduate of Claridon High School, he was a member of the Class of 1951.
For over ten years, Harold worked at the Whirlpool Corporation as an assembler. Prior to Whirlpool, he worked for Marion County driving truck and helping with maintenance.
Formerly, Murph was a member of the Moose Lodge, and he enjoyed the worship services on TV 39.
An avid fisherman, Harold took many trips to many different fishing holes with his family, casting for his favorite catch, catfish.
With his best friend, Roy Everly, the two of them went out to eat as often as they could, with their favorite restaurant being the Shovel Restaurant for their fish dinners.
Just over two months ago, despite his failing health, Murph worked himself into good enough shape for one more trip to Florida to see his son Tom. He enjoyed traveling, and might have enjoyed one too many oysters on his last trip.
To Harold, his children and grandchildren were everything. He looked forward to every minute shared together, and they all took care of one another; even his two year old great grandson who would help his “Pop” by gathering his fifty foot oxygen cord for him.
He will be missed by his five children: Sharon Keller (Mike Barnett) of Marion, Roger (Diane) Mahaffey of LaRue, Tom (Dee) Mahaffey of Florida, George (Mary) Mahaffey, and Melvin (Lydia) Mahaffey, both of Marion; thirteen grandchildren: Tracy (Mike) Darst, Tony Keller, Tammy Keller, Bobby Mahaffey, Cory Mahaffey, Shelly, Jared Christian, Derrick Mahaffey, Jody Mahaffey, Tom (Jen) Mahaffey, Shauna Simpkins, John Simpkins, and Jake Mahaffey; twelve great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Darrell Collins; one niece, Chris (Don) Fassler; two nephews: John (Marlene) Collins, and Lloyd (Sharon) Mahaffey Jr.; their families; and a special friend, Bobby Jones.
Including his parents, Murph was preceded in death by his brother, Lloyd Mahaffey, three sisters: Lucille Turner, Vera Collins, and Clara Mae Mahaffey; and by his former wife, Dorothy Mahaffey Kline.
His family will greet friends on Wednesday from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 p.m. at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion, where funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Doug Ford officiating. Burial will follow in Grand Prairie Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P. O. Box 163549, Columbus, Ohio 43216.
