H. Wayne Carpenter, age 84, of Mount Gilead, died on Tuesday morning, May 6, 2008, at the Woodside Village Care Center.
He was born in Morrow County, on January 3, 1924, the son of the late Chester and Dorothy Brenizer Carpenter. Wayne graduated from Cardington High School in the Class of 1941.
In March of 1943, Wayne joined the U.S. Army, and served in the 11th Airborne Division of the 675th Parachute Glider Field Artillery. A Veteran of World War II, he served in the Battles of New Guinea, the Southern Philippines, and Luzon. For his valor, he was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, Bronze Arrowhead, American Theater Ribbon, and World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged in January of 1946 at the completion of the war.
A lifelong resident of Morrow County, Wayne worked in the Quality Control Department of the Westinghouse Corporation of Mansfield for over thirty nine years, where he specialized in troubleshooting. He retired in 1988.
He will be missed by his sister, Eunice Klinefelter of Cardington; one brother: Frank R. (Sara) Carpenter; and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and wonderful neighbors.
Including his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by four brothers, three sisters-in-law, and one brother-in-law: Donald O. (Marjorie) Carpenter, Wesley A. (Edith) Carpenter, Harry L. (Vera) Carpenter, Lloyd L. Carpenter, and Emerson H. Klinefelter.
Private graveside services with military honors provided by the V.F.W. Post 8054 and AmVets Post 87 will be held at Bethel Cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Snyder Funeral Homes of Mount Gilead.
